Can I suggest something? When you go for a painterly look, drop the lines of the sketch and produce the edges with color contrast, and if you go for a lineart like work, use paths to produce the lines, retrace them and or at least clean them before you color it. Further more, watch out for color perspective, and drop shadows, they add to the 3D- Space feeling, I stronlgy suggest you watch these "tutorials" from feng zhu [link] --> he gives important tips for the look of an image and what you need to look out for. Seriously, that guy gives some serious useful info, he is awesome.
