Only needed a bit more power. The engine it had was able to lift 75% of the plane's weight, so an extra 20 - 30% thrust probably would've been sufficient.

That's interesting. Did not kow that. So a modern engine... Say something that pushes the F-22 through the sky, might be enough to get the idea off the ground?

Yes, probably best to go with the F135, used in the F-35. With it, the XFV-12 would definitely get airborne.
