Description This is actually my first serious attempt at traditional painting and I think it worked out rather well. A great learning experience and certainly something I will do more in the future.
Done with cheapest possible tempera paints.

Very nice artwork! Evocative and with care given to details and colourwork. Your first traditional artwork? Then you're off to a great start. Given your deft hand at illustrating Chaos, you might be interested in knowing that Warhammer Fantasy have a community driven spiritual successor project under steam. Namely, The Ninth Age: www.the-ninth-age.com/

It is fully possible for previous Warhammer fanart to be submitted to T9A, and if their iconography doesn't constitute IP infringement they may well make it into full army books, full credits given. Obviously, such an ambitious project is always welcoming artists, for artwork is what makes or breaks a professional polished product. This is a chance to have one's fanart under an official stamp, and moreover to develop one's own styles for familiar archetypes.

Note that one has to post two comments on the forum before being allowed to upload images to the gallery (just post compliments in the army blog section or suchlike).

Also, they've recently launched their first Art Contest, this time pitting Warriors of the Dark Gods against others: www.the-ninth-age.com/index.ph… Many more contests to follow in months and years to come if this catch on. Something for your talents and tastes, perhaps?

Just mentioning. In any case, great artwork! Have a good day.

Also, as a final follow-up: If you would ever be interested in joining the Ninth Age's art team, then just say the word and I can get you into E-mail contact with the head of it, should you ever happen to be interested: i.imgur.com/dlmQkB6.jpg

I love the way it is colored. Rought, which goes well with who he is and the battle damage.

Superb use of colour and contract
An amazing traditional piece
What was the inspiration behind the overall texture?
It looks very well applied

Thank you very much, glad you like it!

I tried to get the armor to look as old and beaten as possible, letting the brushstrokes create the texture instead of polishing it too much. I basically applied large chunks of unthinned paint, little to no water and had it in roughly four or five layers on average. I then found all the pieces that through this process became darker and added a bit more contrast to them with black, doing the opposite for the lighter ones for highlights.

It really made the texture stand out
Makes sense with the method you employed
There is just a certain kind of grittiness that probably couldn't have been achieved otherwise
A perfect blend of both style, aesthetic and realism

Holy shit! This one is really amazing! For some reason I like this one a bit more compared to your earlier, digital pieces. Maybe it's just because I like that painterly feeling? Who knows? The only thing I do know for sure, is that you've made a really nice piece! ^^

I'd really want to add some counterweight in form of things to do better, but the thing is, that I can't find any. It may not be a perfect piece, because there is none, but I can't spot any mistakes

Haha, thank you very much!

People usually start painting traditionally then move on to digital, but for some reason I did it the other way around.
Drawing traditionally is absolutely no problem, but painting... never really got into it until this one. I've literally just bought more paints so we'll see where it goes from there

Random-Derp In reply to Filip-Hammer [2017-07-08 12:50:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, I've got my first drawing tablet when I started out with drawing overall, thus I barely touched pencils, not even mentioning paints, so my story is pretty much just like yours I guess

I still have some problems when drawing traditionaly, biggest being that I draw in a completely different manner - my pencil sketches are more grotesque, caricatural and comic-like, as opposed to my rather realistic, digital artstyle

Can't wait! What are your thoughts on painting after that one piece?

Filip-Hammer In reply to Random-Derp [2017-07-08 13:09:37 +0000 UTC]

My main problem with precise drawing on a tablet is the lack of surface resistance, basically. It follows the moves far too precisely and then the lines do not come out like they would on paper. Still, it is all a matter of habit - there is certainly no definite "correct" or "wrong" way to work

Well my thoughts are that I really enjoy it, haha. The main problem is, I think, always in the mind. Once you "break the barrier" so to speak, and prove to yourself that something can be done, you are more open to approaching it rather than dismissing it out of hand or after a few failed attempts.

In the end, all of it are valid tools and approaches for accomplishing your goal

Random-Derp In reply to Filip-Hammer [2017-07-08 13:28:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's a bit as if you were trying to draw on glass. I'm already used to it, but I remember that it was quite problematic some time ago so I get your point.

That's great! I mean - enjoying what you do is the best way of motivating yourself ^^ And yeah, it's hard to dissagree on that one!
