This historical Portuguese village is like an open museum, where pages of history are written and a medieval environment always makes you feel like time has stopped.
Óbidos was captured from the Moors by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, in 1148. In 1210 the kind Afonso the 2nd donated it to his wife, Queen D. Urraca and in 1281 it was also donated by king D.Dinis to his future wife: the Queen Santa Isabel. From then until 1883, the town of Óbidos and the surrounding land was always the property of the queens of Portugal, and maybe that is the reason why the town has maintained such a lovely, romantic and picturesque aspect all over the centuries.

Its narrow, cobbled streets, white houses with colorful stripes and flowers scattered throughout the land, particularly in the facade of the houses, walls and gates, Obidos is one of the gayest towns in the country.
From the top of the Castle, one of the most beautiful medieval fortresses in the country, a beautiful panorama over the surroundings areas, blessed by nature, is provided. This Castle also accommodates nowadays one of the finest and prestige hotels in Portugal.

Many places of interest are in this wonderful village, as for example the Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church of Santa Maria (probably founded in the Visigothic period, and converted into a mosque during the Moorish occupation), the Church of Mercy, the Chapel S. Martin, the Sanctuary of the Lord of Stone (already outside the walls) and the interesting Municipal Museum which boasts some of the great works of art by Josefa d'Obidos.

Within the walls, the Straight Street is the commercial heart of the city, where the most varied regional handcrafted items.
At the Tourist Village is possible to obtain the most diverse information, and perform thematic guided tours that best demonstrate the beauty, importance and heritage of this pleasant village Portuguese.
