“Goddess of MARS” is part of a series where I portray the planets of the solar system as goddesses, based on the appearance of each celestial body, their symbols, their cultural importance and their respective gods. You can already see in my profile NEPTUNE, URANUS, SATURN and JUPITER.

Mars is named after the Roman god of war, representing masculinity and youth. It is also often referred to as the “Red Planet” because the iron oxide prevalent on its surface gives it a reddish appearance. Its astronomical symbol (♂) is called “The Spear of Mars” and besides representing the male gender, it is also a stylized version of the god’s spear and shield. Her throwing spear is based somewhat on the shape of the symbol.

She has a pixie haircut to look more tomboyish, dark skin as an adaptation to intense ultraviolet light, and a scarf and a bodysuit to protect herself from the largest dust storms in the Solar System. She carries a little bottle of water in her sash, both as a way of remembering the ancient surface environment of Mars and as a way to hold hope for the future.

Aries is the zodiac sign ruled by Mars.
