Description My first two tattoos!

THe first were the wings with the quote obviously:

Faith is believing in what you can't see,
and the reward of your faith is seeing what you believe.

Lots of people think it's religious but I'm agnostic...if you believe you can fly you can do it, kind of thinking of Icarus but more of myself and where I was in life and how I needed to start believing in myself, seeing it everday really reinforces it for me and even though it's simple, I love it.

The nuatical stars are a play on the faith in believing in myself and finding my direction, but each star has a virtue associated with it, some are religious some are philisophical. I don't think you have to be religious to bestow power in some of its virtues and to try and be a better person.

Anyways, those are my first two, wouldn't trade them for the world, they have gotten me through some rough patches.

I love the meaning behind this! Not a huge fan of the wings part of the tattoo personally but I especially love the stars with the scrolls at the top

You know I look back at them and they are way basic and simple, especially compared to my chest piece that is out of this world but I still love them.

wow, i like it a lot. augustine always knows how to put what he wants to say. i didn't even know he said that until i saw it here, how sad for me... anyways my favorite quote by him is this,
"You called, you shouted, you broke open my deafness. You blazed, you gleamed, you banished my blindness. You lavished your fragrance, I gasped, and now I long for you. I tasted you, and now I hunger and thirst. You touched me, and now I burn with desire for your peace."

sadly, i think it might be too large to fit into a tattoo

i also really like the symbolism you put into the stars and the virtues, and i agree with what you said about organized religion.
i still go to church, and i see its flaws nearly every time i am there. i just remind myself that i am not there to follow those people or their religion. i follow Jesus, and i know i'm not all that great myself.

(i know you said you were agnostic, but i just figures i would share my perspective, because even though i take part in organized religion, i see its flaws.
oh, and sorry this is so long haha)

I really appreciate your thoughtful response and sharing that quote it's a great one, I enjoy all people's perspectives on all things even if I don't agree with them and I would never hold it against them, I think it would be a shame if most people were like me.

too true. i think it is important to be tolerant, but we don't have to always agree, that would make life a bit boring.

but i really do love augustine, i wish i had the passion and the depth he had with words. for now, i'll just settle for reading what his thoughts, i suppose.

your tatoo rocks!!! i'm looking for my first tattoo's i like the symbolism in it, unfortunately in my case i am having a hard time thinking of something symbolic of the places i have been and the journey so far.
I'd love to know what the part it latin says if its not too personal

It says faith is believing in what you can't see, and the reward of your faith is seeing what you believe.

It's a quote from St. Augustine.

The irony of the situation is that I'm not religious, I'm agnostic and really hate the idea of organized religion, but I don't think you have to embrace religion to find meaning or motivation in it's values, being virtuous and having faith in yourself and your actions is equally important I think.

It ties into the second tattoo with the stars, which have philosophical and religious connotations. Everyone knows the "seven deadly" sins, or knows of them. And I know so many hypocritical religious zealots who focus so heavily on not sinning...I don't get why more people don't focus on the seven heavenly virtues which are the stars on my shoulder, one star for each and I got that nautical star because sailors of old used stars to guide themselves, so finding seven virtues to guide my actions and to help me be cognoscente of my actions, especially towards other people, I don't think you have to be religious to be a embrace values that many people have forgotten.

Sorry for the long winded explanation.

Technically, someone with superior thought on something, but that sounds a little self-loving and important, I guess I just meant that I think about everything and the repercussions of what I do and who I am...so I guess it's the right word, because who would be more of an expert on me, than me....except my mom.
