The first of today's final three example Avatars is Ratchet, of the "Ratchet and Clank" game series.

Out of everything I played on the PS2 back in the day, "Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando" was my favorite game, with "Dark Cloud 2" a close second. Everything about Going Commando was and is still fantastic. A great expansion on the first game's style, humor, mechanics, weapon variety, and gameplay variety, especially with the space combat challenges set between different planetary locations. And, by far the most iconic soundtrack in the series that I can always return to and say, "this is the definitive Ratchet and Clank sound."

What stuns me so much about modern Insomniac is how much they've shifted focus to aim for a younger audience and away from the tween and teen audience they courted originally. The more mature humor is almost completely stripped out. They felt the need to give Ratchet the more Hollywood-trite and typical "destined for greatness" / "last of his kind" origin story. Hell, they even went and did the same thing with Clank by making him the prodigal son of the guardian of Time. Good God! I don't need all this manufactured and retconned importance to enjoy these two misfits. THEY'RE EFFING MISFITS. That's all they need to be.

I still enjoy A Crack in Time to a degree because of the overall experience, but I can't play Tools of Destruction or Into the Nexus without feeling let down by the lack of charisma, that humorous tongue-in-cheek tone, or the weapons that used to be so satisfying. Like seriously, the weapons between Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal were THE BEST assortment. But once they started taking away the weapons I came to rely on, like the gravity bombs, the basic machine-gun type, or the Blitz Gun, in favor of all these sluggish, single-shot weapons, the fun dissipated.

Innovation is great. But how do you not understand your own series to the point that the latest entries no longer have what made previous entries so satisfying?

Well, there's another rant for the day.
