Description Clan Ōttsumae is a minor clan with ancient and strong ties to the imperial house.
During the Age of Carnage (Ninjō Jidai), before the Daiasu sided with Emperor Kōmyō, the Ōttsumae were loyal followers of the exiled Shōgun Nobuyoshi.
During the battles of the Age of Slaughter, the Ōttsumae attained the distinguished title of Hatamochi of the imperial guard, just below the rank of commander that belonged to the Daiasu.
By the end of the conflict, although the clan had gained little in terms of territory and wealth, the prestige they had achieved made them one of the most prominent of the minor clans.
Prestige that increased when Lord Shinta, the predecessor of the current clan leader, married one of the shōgun's daughters.
The clan has, at least for a century, enjoyed political independence from the larger clans, i.e. they are solely dependent on the Shōgun and the emperor, and they also enjoy prestigious positions within the court that are not entrusted even to loyal clans such as the Daiasu.

The Kamon of the family, sometimes stylised but generally not, shows a crane with spread wings. It is white with blue details. The background of the Kamon is blue and white, sometimes edged with blue.
The blue represents calm and confidence, while the crane signifies good luck and fortune.
