Holy crap that's amazing!! How was this made?

finaformsora In reply to Vamp-Wolf-Everdain [2014-07-07 05:40:30 +0000 UTC]
I cut it out of pine wood with a jigsaw and scrollsaw. Glued it with titebond 3 wood glue. Shaped it with a dremel/router/chisels/anything that fits the bill. I used bondo to fill in imperfections and help shape a few areas, and then sanded a lot of it by hand. I cut out clear polycarbonate discs as covers for the clock above the handle and cast some resin eyes with a blue dye. Prime, sand, bondo, sand, prime, sand, prime, paint.

I'm just curious, about how the improvements came about. This one looks a lot more polished than the first version.

Well, I changed the spikes to be centered on the new one instead of on one side of the key on the past ones. That allowed me to give the clock some shape.
I also have more tools and know how to use the old ones better now. I learned that hand sanding is a big deal when it comes to keeping things flat as well as smooth, and this time around I knew about bondo whereas I didn't know about it with the past versions.
I also have a spraygun now, which allowed me to spray the glow paint on instead of brushing it on, as well as mix colors. Not having a deadline and being rushed wasn't a hindrance either.

Simply badass. With all the measurement blueprinted for ten old one I didn't think it needed an update when done but this one takes the cake. Very well done. 👏

Thank you! It's all wood, and it took months (mainly because of weather/dayjob/laziness)

Thank you so much! I just try not to sound vain and everything. There's still some things I wasn't able to fix. Luckily, showing everyone my mistakes on the last one came in handy this time.

Looks amazing!! I'm really impressed by the improvements in cleanliness in both the sculpt and the paint. Its much more polished in this one and definitely looks like the best version you've made so far :> I especially like the arrow-like web at the tip of the blade; the change in thickness makes it look sharper, cleaner, and overall more convincing as a weapon than in the previous models (like they're blades instead of blunt weapons). I enjoyed the glow in the dark too, and with the cleaner application this time around, it makes a lovely added touch to the paint!
My only critique would be in the goat head; if you plan on doing more animal based sculptures I would do studies of the animal first (drawings, practice sculpts, etc). That way, it will feel like you have a stronger understanding of the animal you're making a sculpt of, and any simplifications or "cartoonization"s will feel more purposeful. At the moment, although its far better than its previous versions, the goat head is still a little flat and wonky, so maybe some studies before doing your next venture would help! I'm not sure if that makes sense or if its just me being overly picky but I figured its some food for thought :>

Thank you! I was having trouble with the goat head because it couldn't be sculpted into the clock; the beard had to be on top of it. So it was either make the whole thing thicker and make the horns and fur tufts look weird or keep it the same and lose some shaping. I'm not particularly good at sculpting anyway right now.

Hooray! You're done!!! You did a FANTASTIC job! Although your blending on the wings is a little better then at the top where the dark and light blue meet. That just takes practice. But still, love it!
Now if the rest of my material would come in I could finish all my projects. TT_TT

yeah, I have a close up in the folder now. The glow paint is more like latex and it began to peel when I was removing the tape, and it wouldn't feather out around the brown paint when I sanded it, so unfortunately I couldn't fix that.
