That all the cool "anonymous" quotes you find in history were made by a woman, but because women weren't allowed opinions their names were never put down with said quote.
Weather or not this is actually fact or just a cool feminist quote in itself I cannot confirm.

Honestly, this is probably true. For a while in history women couldn't even own their own thoughts. No, seriously. If a women wrote anything, had a good idea, or even made up an invention, it was considered property of their husband or father. Sucks, huh? Since men got all the credit for things women did, who knows how many things throughout history they actually did do. It seems like it shouldn't matter nowadays, but it does suck when a guy gets all up on his high horse and says things like "women are useless, they didn't even event anything" and stuff like that.

A nice quote, though it's a shame about all of cheeky comments and the butthurt replies. And before someone blasts me for being a sexist/dumb/asshole/uneducated twerp, I'm a proud woman who just has thick skin or has gotten over herself.
Honestly? If you want to help get over the sexism bump (cough, mountain, cough), don't waste your energy replying to this or any other comments you don't like and devote some of the research you demand others to do to find a way to make a real impact, rather than giving someone else the pleasure of riling you.

I say it was the Bible. Men somewhere along the line realized through examples of societies like Sparta that women were becoming too prominent and so they decided to make an excuse (the men) to push down women and make them inferior and servants to men. Just look at the story of Adam and Eve. Right there man. It's a conspiracy in history >___>

I agree with this comment. Not the bit about being a dude (though I trust that you are one, if you believe you are), but the quote. It's a shame that people can't remember that throughout most of history groups besides females were stigmatized, due to race, religion, class, etc.

i never knew who anonymous was. I thought that was weird that we'd have so many awesome quotes and poems and what not and yet know clue who the author was.

And here I was horrified at the idea that I was not able to read anything women have published back in the "olden days" when women weren't allowed to have their own names on published works but instead would have to use their husbands name just to name an example.

It's just because there's a stigma attached for boys that states women write girly things, so if something was written by a girl, it's probably girly. But then again, they also told Jo that you don't become rich or successful writing children's books

fun children's literacy fact I learned while taking a course, originally Harry Potter was going to be a female main character but she was advised in early drafts that male characters are read by both boys and girls while girls are the ones mostly reading books about girls, which sadly is a real trend.

I just think its a shame that it's somewhat acceptable for a woman to rise to the stature of a man, but deplorable for a man to sink to the level of a woman. I hope someday a little boy playing with barbies can be accepted as much as a little girl playing with trucks.

I really think you're maybe looking at this situation from the wrong angle. I'm a guy, putting that out there now because it's pretty relevant, and growing up, if you did something that wasn't very masculine or downright feminine, you were just considered "gay". I'm not sure if it was so much "sinking to the level of a woman" as it's simply people being ignorant and homophobic. The way you put it, gender is viewed as top and bottom, but I see it more like they're side by side, but with a huge barrier between them.
I'll be honest, in high school I didn't give a single damn about women's rights because it just didn't affect me directly but how you said "I hope someday a little boy playing with barbies can be accepted as much as a little girl playing with trucks," really struck a chord with me and I wanted to respond. You see, I got swept up in the whole My Little Pony craze (if it weren't obvious by the avatar) a year or so ago and Lauren Faust's vision was to create a show for girls that didn't suck, could be enjoyed by everyone, and would have relatable characters learning meaningful lessons. My experience with this show has actually made me respect women immensely because it finally bridged that "barrier" that I previously mentioned for myself. It showed me that things for women, or in this case for girls, can truly be meaningful and worthwhile as well.
So going back to what you said about barbies and trucks, I agree entirely and I would even go as far as saying that the "pink" and "blue" aisles should be done away with and merged because kids should be able to choose what THEY want. Though, and it might simply be a regional thing because I live in a bible belt community, I think the main reason why guys are afraid or simply unwilling to embrace feminine things isn't entirely because they feel that they would be "sinking to a woman's level" but more along the lines of not being confident enough in their sexuality and not wanting others to think they're "gay" or something. That, and some men are just inherently more masculine than others and there's really nothing wrong with that.

Thank you so much for replying! I'm glad that my comment "struck a chord". It's a shame that a boy showing any signs of feminity is considered "y" in our society. But I do think there is hope. Like Bronies for example. The fact that males can like what most would be considered a "girly" show so openly gives me confidence that one day we can do away with the "pink and blue aisles". I am so glad that you have a new view of women due to that wonderful show! Have you ever read any works by the psychologist Sandra Bem? Her entire life's work focuses on just this topic. Based on your response, you seem super passionate about this subject, and I think you would really enjoy her book "the lenses of gender".

I'm so glad we agree on this! I was afraid I was accidentally going to spark an argument. It is really a shame that men that aren't entirely masculine tend to be looked down upon by other men. I've always felt that having a good balance between masculinity and femininity can create a better person in general, one that carries the positive traits of both genders, without going so far as to sacrificing their personal sexual identities. A man can still be "manly" without being chauvinistic and unfeeling. Simply understanding how the other side thinks can go a long way. That's why the main thing that I've valued about Faust's show is that it showed me that boys and girls really aren't all that different. We have similar wants and desires, dreams and aspirations, problems and worries, that I could relate to personally thinking back to myself growing up.
I've actually been very interested in gender studies for a long time now actually, but I've never really done any formal research into it. I think I'll certainly look into the book you suggested! Thank you! ^_^
