Description For the Vector Evolution contest.

I created a vector of a kakapo, an endangered flightless bird. It's endangered because of it's evolutionary idiocy XD It only breeds when there are an abundance of a certain type of flower (which is usually about every 4 years), it can't fly to get away from predators, it doesn't run very fast, and in general is a pretty useless creature XD But I love it anyway.

created in Inkscape.

I feel bits of it are waaay overworked, due to me not planning it first, but meh. I do rather like the vibrancy of the outcome.

Here's the outlines, detail shots and a WIP

The background contrasts nicely with the body color of the kakapo, the detail on the feathers are amazing, and I love how it's reaching for the fruit. How you colored the kakapo's plumage is awesome too.
The stick/branch it's sitting on is nicely shaded. I like the eyes. The whiskers on its face are precious. a.deviantart.net/avatars/k/a/k… " alt=" " title="kakapoplz" /> "I like this a lot"

Oh man, I'd never have the patience to do this in Inkscape. Awesome.

I'm always impressed by vectors because I just can't comprehend how to do them myself, or if my brain would even be capable of thinking that abstractly when it comes to creating a piece of art. I think this one is particularly impressive though because of the reference picture you used, which is so busy. And I get this feeling from vectors like they've sort of digitalised or even flatted in a way, an image, and to do that from such a busy and complicated reference image...well, anyway, I don't really know what I'm talking about really. I just like all the pretty greens! XD

When all else fails, resort to infantile observations. @.@ Oooh, pretty colours!

Mind, colour is nearly always one of the first things I notice about a piece of art. Colour and then technique. Subject matter comes last for me. And yet I don't really like most post-impressionist art. Go figure.

tbh vectors are easier than people think, it's just thinking about it like cut outs of paper and layering them on top of one another. Yes the pen tool is odd, but once you've mastered that you're off XD

I love the colour of the kakapo because it's such a 'mundane' green but seems to sort of be a very vibrant green but it looks mundane cos it blends into it's background, unlike other tropical birds.

Oh I love it! I had a bit of a hard time figuring out its head due to the stylization, maybe its eye could be made clearer so we can spot it easily? But I love the style you used for this, what a gorgeous bird!

The head area got totally overworked at one point and I never quite managed to rescue it. The more I tried the more I killed it XD

I had just been watching a documentary about pacific birds and this one was the cutest most ridiculous bird I've ever seen XD

Looks like a great Kakapo to me! Do they have them in Zoos where you are?

FionaCreates In reply to Fluttur [2011-02-16 01:47:13 +0000 UTC]

I don't believe they have them in the UK.

I was watching a documentary on pacific island birds the other day about their complete inability to deal with change because they're toooo specially evolved, that and I remember the shot from the stephen fry programme on kakapo's where the kakapo was attempting to mate with a cameraman... XD

Ooh, they have them here in NZ in the wild is why I was wondering if maybe they had them in zoos HAHA! XDD

Oh dude seriously? Lol wow that's kinda creepy. I haven't seen that .__. But yeah, lots of flightless birds here Probably all just as bad with the change thing, but who can blame them when we're cutting down their forestry and introducing more pests? xD

FionaCreates In reply to Fluttur [2011-02-16 02:24:13 +0000 UTC]

most of the birds have evolved in an environemt with no predators, and no monkeys, so a lot of the lizards and birds have become non agressive, but also they've lost their ability to tell when it's dangerous and run away. XD
