Description

Floki from History Channel's Vikings

What started as a supposed quick study in colour and likeness waiting for season 3 to begin in Feb 2015 somehow got wayyyy out of hand. Though if something is going to get out of hand there are worse things to do with your time than make 7 portraits.

 (Season 1 and 2 era)

The stages of this one can be seen here --> fionacreates.tumblr.com/post/1…

There I am again with a critique! Just like the artwork of Rollo, a lot of features here appeal to me once again. These two works are also my favourite ones in the series you're making.

The colour scheme and execution are once again on point. The way you've portrayed the character is also once again very nice. But what really puts this one in front for me is how this one is a bit more refined.
Roughness fits with Rollo, and somehow this refinement fits a bit more with Floki. The clothing still feels nice and rough, but then the face is more detailed and thus captivates your attention more.

Awesome works! Don't ever feel bad about them!

I'm just editing this in as I just got round to posting it earlier... but for this one I have all the staged saved (I have no idea why just for this one...) I thought you might want a look.

Yeah for all these I started with a luminous hideously coloured background I slowly covered up with colour, I saw it on a painting program where a lady did it with oils and well digital.. oils... it's the same right?! XD

Pfffff, yahh of course it can be the same. Digital can be anything you want! FREEDOM! XD

I find digital easier to be expansive with because of the ease of which you can add perspective lines you can later remove etc etc. Also gone is the time where all digital illustration was fantasy paintings, much of the pro world is digital now and there's so much style and scope ugh I love it so much....

I'm not familiar with the show, but this is beautiful.  I think my mom watches it, haha.   Just curious if these are from certain moments in the show?  Your colors are so gorgeous.

I tried to avoid just drawing promo shots as they're kinda dull to keep repeating so they are all mostly picked from scenes from the show though I honestly can't recall which now it's been so long!

Thanks I specifically started these as colour and lighting studies and to see what I could manipulate out of a scene, and promo stills are often very brightly lit erasing any background colour interaction, which works for their purpose but makes them not great for learning from as I intended.

Right! I think these worked well for your intention, then, and as finished pieces.  I might have to try out something like that to get some color practice in as well.  They're very inspiring.  Thank you!

Whenever I find myself struggling with my art for some reason... I always return to studies of.. something.... I don't paint for any proper finished pieces but I learn a lot by doing it. I just happened to be obsessed with vikings at the time I started these. I highly recommend doing studies of things to learn stuff that you can take back to your normal style even if you're a cartoony artist or anime or whatever there's stuff to be learned always. It also is calming because I'm not worrying about WHAT to make just about copying and learning.

That's very true, and good advice.  I've found doing gesture studies and watching tutorials is very calming and informative, and my art usually improves immediately afterwards. : )  I'll definitely try and do more, color isn't one of my strongest skills.  It's harder for me to keep in the habit of doing studies since getting out of school, but absolutely worth trying to keep up with.

Ugh... colour was my worst skill for a very long time (alongside composition but that's irrelevant to these studies lol). So about ugh 4 years ago I embarked upon a crusade to learn about colour and every drawing I did at the time had to have good colour even if it had bad anatomy a bad idea or whatever if the colour was good it was a success. I went about it by collecting art with colour I loved and recording the palettes, and I learned there was a kind of theme to the way people who use colour well use it, and that I could work with that too. I also worked with palettes from colourlovers.com and other places like that all the time until one day I found I wasn't having to go look for a good palette I was doing it myself! (Like a year later mind you...) Basically I made a conscious effort to get good. Because tbh anatomy is all well and good but colour is what sells a piece (in my opinion of course) anatomy is what you see once you've been hooked! XD

That's really impressive!  And yeah, thank you for putting it that way, it's really good advice and something I'm going to try and be more aware of.  I have a bad habit of over-focusing on anatomy out of fear of failure but I'm plugging along, and your words help me see it in a new way that hopefully will push me to let go a little and focus on the rest of the piece that I enjoy. : )

Esp in cartooning... anatomy is not quite as important as people seem to think it is.

Actually the reason people do get attached to it is I think because if your other foundations are not working so well, such as you have not so great composition, and not so great colour choices/tone balances... you HAVE To rely solely on your ability to make it 'accurate' to make your work 'good'.

The more I play with colour and composition the more free I am to break rules to make compositions flow and worry less about being "accurate". I looked at the artists I admired most and watched how they did things with the anatomy by simplifying it down or such to make the composition tell the story better, and I started to do it itself. That's not to say I totally disregard it, but rather you can be more free with it if you know your foundations.

However there is never any excuse for the broken spine ladies in the boob and butt pose. Never.

shuufly In reply to FionaCreates [2016-07-28 19:16:19 +0000 UTC]

I agree. It's more important to have simplified anatomy that conveys emotion/character than 'accurate' anatomy in comics. It's something that takes a lot of hard work to get right though.

I think my tendency to focus on accurate anatomy stems largely from my art school experience (not great) and my focus in scientific illustration. I'm a very logic and technical based person and emotion and empathy does not come to me as easily as a lot of people, so I tend to struggle more in those areas, although that is the part of work I am the biggest fan of. When it comes to media I am the most interested in character related stuff moreso than action or even plot (at least the part that doesn't lend itself to the character interaction and development). Of course in the best media those two are inseparable.

I am definitely trying to work through it, it's a mindset or habit that's hard to shake, especially when I have to split my focus every day between art and plush and my job and my wife and friends and finding time to relax (not that other people don't manage to do so, but everyone's different), haha. I'm getting there though, I'm just slower than a lot of people. It's annoying how much money = time. Anyway sorry to whine at you. I'm definitely a work in progress.

It's a careful balance like anything else. An infinite struggle for a libra like me I'm afraid, lol

I'm not a huge fan of Marvel or DC or similar comics in general, but yeah those boobs and butt poses D : disgusting

What I would suggest is if you've identified what you want out your work and what you're lacking... is to copy work directly (just.. not to post on dA or wherever) that has what it is you want. Then you start to learn the language of art that you like, like how emotion is conveyed even subtly (doesn't need to be someone bawling their eyes out to be sad and all, lawl teenage me with the over exaggeration...) You don't even have to finish it, I never do, it would be a waste of time, but I sketch the colour and the composition and the form and whatever I'm trying to learn and it's amazing what you miss if you're just looking at it as opposed to fully studying it. PLUS this method is fun. I avoid anything that's like "should do the thing but don't want to" like "draw 100 hands" or whatever. BORED! XD

I think I will.  It's something I've wanted to try for a while but felt weird about it because of how much people hammer into you that copying is bad, lol.  They never explain that it's okay when you're practicing!  Or maybe I've just forgotten, haha.  Thank you so much for the advice!

Yeah there's a reason in formal art schooling you copy A LOT! It works! And the online community has some stupid ideas about drawing the more irritating of which is if you draw without reference you're better. You're also more boring so whatever trade off people want to make for pride. I'd rather be more creative with research than full of pride cos no refs tbh XD
