Description Egads! A tutorial! Not just any tutorial either! I've had about 109 people ask me to do a dapple tutorial and I finally broke down and did it. Don't laugh at my lack of scanner.

Thank you so much for this! It's really helpful, and I only wish I'd had this a few weeks ago when I did a dapple for my AP Art class. xD I was working off a picture, which helped with the knowing where to put what parts, but I've never thought of using a tortillon with a pencil drawing. Thank you! I'm sure I'll be doing plenty of dapples in the future!

You have such an amazing drawing talent it's unbelievable. And this tutorial is wonderful. It helped alot. Too bad I don't have a talent for shading. XD I love to draw horses, but I can't seem to shade. XP

Anyway, I absolutely love how you shaded the horse's face. You really know how to make it come to life.

Can this dappling technique be used with other colors or would you suggest a different dapple pattern? [like for palominos, buckskins, etc,]

It can. What you want to do though, is instead of starting with the plain white paper, shade a light layer of graphite, then go over it with the dappling technique. Shade it through and voila >> [link]

one other question.. when you use a tortillon.. how much presure do you use? I've tried to use them but I can never seem to get the desired effect I want.. so I usually end up using my finger lol but we both know how badly that smudges and can ruin a picture.

Wow, total lack of response on my part. So sorry! I use a fair amount of pressure on the dark parts and less on the light. What I did to get a feel for the shades that it can produce is get a piece of scanner paper and draw a big black line in pencil. Press really hard close to the line and gradually decrease the pressure. It helped me a lot.
