You haven't seen the 1946 French film of Beauty and the Beast?

I've seen that, I wouldn't call it a horror version.Β

There is also a 1978 Czech horror film Panna a Netvor, which I highly recommendΒ

Do folklore and mythology in general count?

Thankfully a few of these are actual horror movies. Β One is The Asylum's version of Sleeping Beauty. Β The other is a modern retelling of Hansel & Gretel. Β Both aren't perfect but I feel they are overlooked. Β They're currently available on Netflix. Β As for Rumpelstiltskin, the closest thing to a horror movie I've seen is "Rumpelstiltskin The Graphic Novel by Martin Powell. Β Which is a bit darker then I expected for something aimed at kids.

Great ideas - could you draw horror comics of these if you haven't already?
I think Hansel and Gretel was pretty cool... While it would be scarier with two kids about to get fried, it would also be harder to find convincing child actors...
As for Peter Pan.. The author originally wanted to make Pan out as the villain before Hook came along. In the original Peter Pan, he was the only one who didn't age, so he killed off his Lost Boys when they got too old. Or when there were too many of them. Or when he got bored, and switched sides in the middle of fights with Hook's pirates. Pan's pretty much a homicidal bastard of a kid, and that'd make a decent horror show.

Elsa was intended to be the villian in Frozen, but they made her into an Elphaba kn knockoff/Mary Sue

The history of Pinocchio was truly horrifying.Β Here was a fairy tale written for children by someone who openly detested children!!!

Yes. If you are looking for a darker tale for Peter Pan or a Peter Pan like figure it`s one the better one.
The author is renowned dark fantasy artist Brom.
He add his own twist the Peter Pan folklore and some beautiful illustration as well.

H&G Witch Hunters was actually pretty good
and it definitely had enough blood/gore in it

the plot is pretty interesting, and though the trailer depicts gretel getting kidnapped it doesn't happen till much later in the movie
it has a few suprises and the charaters are a lot of fun
"Jean Grey" as Muriel and "Hawkeye" as Hansel (this one killed me with happiness)
it has some really funny one liners, usually courtesy of smart ass Hansel
the only complaint I have is it was a bit more bloody/gory than it needed to be

These are all wonderful choices in fairytales. Speaking of which....you should see the tv series Grimm, it's got some really interesting takes on fairy tales.

Pied Piper - Could totally see that
Red Riding Hood - Saw that version with Amanda Seyfried, they could have done more with it . . . it just seemed to go too fast.
Hansel & Gretel - Yeah, Witch Hunters looks weird, though I think they're on the right track . . . sorta. There could be more.
Beauty & the Beast - Like Phantom of the Opera, with the monster actually getting the girl instead of the hunk. But it's one of my favorite fairy tales of all time, so I'm not sure if I want too much change.
Jack & the Beanstalk - YES!! Fear the giant! Guess what, there was a TV movie about the descendants of Jack, and the giant was actually a good fellow instead of evil . . . which didn't make sense. Definitely want more of scary giants than sweet, misunderstood ones. UGH!
Rumpelstiltskin - Oooh . . . that would make a nice horror movie
Pinocchio - Eh, not so sure on this one, unless you want to make it more like Child's Play (which is being remade for 2014). Though, Pinocchiomon/Puppetmon (Digimon Adventure) was an interesting character.
Princess and the Goblin - The cartoon was creepy enough on its own, but not sure about the book, might have to look into that. But, it could make an interesting horror.
Peter Pan - . . . Nope
Sleeping Beauty - Sounds like an interesting twist, but not sure.

You know the other day, someone wrote to me a similar comment like this, but I have seen Jack and The Beanstalk: The Real Story. I just couldn't belive that the Henson company was in charge of that, and I loved Labrynth and The Dark Crystal.

That was because Brian Henson hated the original tale's questionable morals.

I know, it seemed weird that they had to change the giant from being the evil creep into the gentle sweetheart. It made an interesting story, but not what I was looking for.

Pied Piper- agreed
Red Riding Hood- done it twice
Hansel and Gretal-did it in Korea
Beauty and the Beast-I wish they would
Jack and the Beanstalk- Actually working on it.
Rumplstitskin- agreed
Pinocchio- I've read some scary retellings but in the end I gotta agree to disagree on that one.
Princess and the Goblin- Heard of a Play of a retelling but again agree to disagree
Peter Pan- Kinda can't see that one. Sorry
Sleeping Beauty-Agreed but If I had to pick the top. It would have to be Repunzal. I can easily see Mother Gothal as a soul snatching serial killer.

Well there was that surreal horror 80s movie 'A company of wolves' which was a dark horror fantasy about being wary of the opposite gender as we grow up. It's one of my favourite 80s fantasy flicks.

Well yes, I just said that in my description. And the parents didn't just leave them in the forest, Hansel and Gretle just got lost in fear of their stepmother.
