Description The two were originally young boys who constantly pondered about their existence. However as a contrast the last son caused him to think of saving not himself but everyone else whilst Shinji thought that everyone should die because he hated himself.

Eventually the two were caught in an accident/event that caused them to be scouted by governments in their worlds (The U.S and NERV)
However their governments only used them to commit horrible atrocities upon mankind ultimately driving both of them down paths of insanity/further insanity and sadness

Due to this violence the two try to run away from these governments multiple times but ultimately are roped back in being further manipulated.
Both then were used in order to achieve a project that would change humanity across the globe by force but they didn’t want part in this and chose to run away again.

This ultimately drove to them being roped back in once again and due to their poor mental states and regret over killing several others transform into “gods.”
In their god like states they lose themselves and trigger an end of the world event similar to one that happened a long time ago (The great division and The second impact) with it succeeding but being slightly changed via another force who is related to them (Richard Nixon and Rei)
These events while tragic were fated to happen to them via other forces (Nixon and the Ocean Scrolls)

Also both have a funny theme with how while the Last Son tried to save everyone ultimately driving them further away and never truly saved them and for Shinji (in the original ending anyways and technically the other ending) while trying to push more people away he ultimately brought them closer even if he didn’t ultimately save them.

Also a little neat one is how both series/characters are associated with Christian imagery
