Description Aka AlteredQuest Commission #2 for The Altered Beasts

The morning sun has vanquished the horrible night...

That's a quote out of Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest, for those who don't know! William Reyes requested that I paint up something for their remix of Bloody Tears (the main CV2 overworld theme). Creepy+beautiful was the goal in both their music direction and my take on visualizing it into a scene.

The Angry Video Game Nerd has vanquished the horrible night.

Sorry, I had to, I think of him whenever Castlevania II is brought up

But it's still a great looking picture.

Looks as if Billy Door were enjoying his time in Reaper-Man. (AlthoughΒ  he didn't play any instrument)

Hahah yeah, the instrument is just kind of stuck in there because the song remix by the Alteredbeasts is an acoustic guitar so... why not.

haha thanks. I find the best way to improve (other than just painting!) is trying to understand how to break things down with reference. Which is easier said than done on tree branches.

so true! it's hard to study it too. Hahah.

Yeah somethings are easier to study than others, for trees I just kind of gave up trying to find a pattern I could break it down on and decided to just be more random and sporadic with branches leaves and holes. It worked to some degree!

I'm totally gonna try that out! you're smart

Not that smart I just know when I have no idea what I'm doing and people have figured these things out somehow before me so I go looking. This one is a decent bare bones tutorial on trees. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XHyuq… key points are not to be too stiff and just let the lines swerve and squiggle a little so it looks more natural

Totally, whenever I look for tutorials, videos are the first go-to on the list. Books and pictures dont do nearly as much

Thanks! Medusa fav.me/d5tpsfi and the bridge fav.me/d5tq2hz took muuuuch longer, those took months! Where as this one only took a few days, hooray for improvement!

I think it's okay that drawing a picture takes some time (weeks, months) if it's really decent one. I like that dark style in the Bridge, because while you're playing the original game you need to imagine by yourself how the environment around Simon really looks like (because of NES graphics).

Yeah certain pictures with so much detail warrant so much time, though back then I had a very different process. Kind of a beginner photo manipulation / matte painting style of using textures. The new approach iv been using has been trying to take away all the handicaps iv built up over the years and just straight painting with minimal tricks. I havent touched burn and dodge in ages heh. But people still enjoy the old stuff so thats good too

I guess, it was a little bit hard for you to refuse from your old technique

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FirebornForm In reply to DevKitt [2013-12-23 02:09:22 +0000 UTC]

A little bit! I always have it in my head that the old technique is faster, with photo overlays and 3d bases but to learn it faster, gotta do it all by hand
