i dunno about in-story but out-story the reason is that they decided on and filmed the thumb cutting off scene after pretty much everything else. so the scenes that were filmed before but take place after didn't have the cut-off thumb.

ah well. I'm glad they put that scene in anyways. It gives a very strong feel of what wikus is going through, and the trigger for his mutilation is his beloved wife he wants to see again.

I agree with DuoRadon, I think that since he was still going through his transformation that he had time to regenerate a new finger since he hadn't finished it yet.

He did get his thumb back, you can see it in the part where he pilots the drop ship....but I don't know if it was a continuity error of if the Prawns can regenerate severed digits like some real-life animals do?
