The moment I got this commission I knew I was going to try my hardest to make it look like an animation frame. The red fox character is simply named Samurai Fox, and because of that I thought of Samurai Jack and how Genndy Tartakovsky always uses color tones to build up his backgrounds. I tried to mimic that as best I could without making the image seem too busy, pulling together a night time bamboo forest scene with sticky mist floating around. The hands gave me trouble in this picture as did the sword, ironic that something so simple could be so bothersome. All in all though I enjoyed working on this commission and got to listen to a lot of wonderful new age music to help keep my mind inspired.Commission for Samurai Fox on Furcadia.

Wow, this looks simply amazing. I deffinately got the samurai Jack feel of this right off, but at the same time you made it your own. I can deffinately see the firepixie-style shinning through the work. The size of the picture just adds to the overall 'masterpeice' feel of this, and the black border is a nice touch. The mist is a nice effect. I really like that you chose cool tones for the background and majority of the picture, it makes a very nice contrast with the fox's red fur, really bringing the eye to the figure and making him look intense around the serene scenery.

I seriously thought of Samurai Jack the moment I full-viewed it, and then of course I read the description. I think you pulled the look off wonderfully.
I love the feel of it. Not just his expression, but also the mood that the colors of the background suggest.
The coloring is amazing, and I adore that robe especially, not sure why though. You can tell you spent a lot of time working on it, even with the 'simple' style.

I like the robe very much, manly the trim; I've always wanted to try an effect where the outlines were light while the coloring was dark, the contrast makes things seem... surreal.

Thanks! I had fun messing with the expressions; at first I tried the screaming face but that didn't work as well so I went with this one instead. It seems to follow that 'noble samurai don't lose your cool, fool' attitude.

This is, in my personal opinion, THE BEST picture you've done so far. I absolutely love it. The pose, the clothing, the color scheme, the setting... I love how you got the mist effect.
The back doesn't take away form the main focus and that's great. It's not too detailed and at the same time not to simple.

That makes me feel really good about this picture. I'm so glad so many like it besides the commissioner. The mist effect was actually the easist part of this picture, all I did was use a pale blue shade, dodge and burn here and there, adjusted the levels and presto, instant mist.
