This humpback whale was playing near the vessel. It and another circled us several times, putting on a show of how playful they can be. A few times they came quite close (a few metres) to the vessel and just sat in the water watching us as we watched them. Taken at Hervey bay, Queensland in August, 2004.Related content

oh damn...i have been fasinated with humpbacks since i was a lil girl...i have always wanted to watch them in person... when is whale season??? now that im in australia i should really go and see them somewhere...i have to...

Whale season is from July to September. Queensland is the best place to go whale watching, but there are a few places at Nelsons Bay (Just north of Newcastle) that have whale watch tours. Its a great experience.

That's a great photo. I would so love to go whale watching. I adore the ripples in the deep blue water and the small indent for the whale's body amazes me

You must go sometime. It was so awesome to witness these creatures come right up to the boat and just float in the water, like they were watching us. I will definitely go again during next years whale sighting season.
