Ah, The Plague Dogs, written by the same author of another great novel, Watership Down. Petal defiantly has quite the taste, but won't the "animal testing lab" parts of the book make her sad (even though they're relatively minor)?

it is, but it depends what edition you read for the ending. With the first edition of the book it didn't have a happy ending, but other editions after that there's a happy ending.
