For starters, use as many references as you can get. This should help you develop a feeling for proportions and perspective. If you get a certain routine at things you can start to experiment with styles and see what fits you best. : )

You can sign up on drawing websites called oekakis and use their programs for free. Or get Paint Tool Sai (it's not expensive). It's good and there are tons of tutorials on the internet.
