I'm glad you asked, my friend. In the original comics, Jessica Cruz is struggling with crippling metal Illness and having to deal with returning to the world after being a shut in for 3 years. In other words, she should be the Fluttershy of the group, not Bubblebee. But instead, Lauren FRAUD decided to turn her into a stereotypical hippie who refuse to fight and making everyone to eat vegetables instead of meat because she thought green is the color of the environmentalists.

In the comics, Jessica was struggling with PTSD after witnessing the death of her friends at the hands of two monsters, she was found and possessed by the Ring of Volthoom (from Power Ring of the Crime Syndicate), which sought to exploit her trauma. After conquering her fears and breaking free of Volthoom's grasp, Jessica was chosen to be a Green Lantern.

Have to admit that I've been surprised at how popular Jessica has become. But they did a very good job developing her character.

It took awhile, but she's grown on me more than her partner. They have tried, but he's still pretty much a one trick pony. While Jessica's started on a similar one note origin, the writers have seemed to invest more time in her characterization over the past few years.
