As far back as anyone can remember, it's always been a tradition to kiss someone on New Years day at midnight, a promise to bond an everlasting love of good luck for the rest of the year. Amy Rose the Cat had always dreamed of sharing this special event with another, a certain someone in particular. Oh, of course it was Sonic the Cat, the love of her life. She had loved him ever since he had rescued her from Metal Sonic on Little Planet so many years ago. Even though she was so determined to win his heart, the cyan feline had always seemed to deny the whole thing completely, and run away from her when she tried. Even with her broken heart, she still would stay strong against it, her goal to never be let down.

But this year was different. Amy was growing tired of chasing her own tail after him, it always had the same ending. She felt helpless and let down, like she was losing grip. She couldn't possibly go on forever, could she? Especially with the new year, which meant one thing: Another year of chasing after him, and ending the way it started. Nothing ever seemed to change. She would lose over and over, until she had nothing left.

Even with her despair and bad outlook on the upcoming year, she tried to be happy when he had invited her to the celebration at Avin's cliff where they would be counting down. When she had met with him, she was generally surprised when she noticed she had been the only one he had invited. Which was strange, she had expected him to invite Tails and their other friends too, yet they were nowhere to be seen. She asked him about this, and he confirmed it. He told her he wanted to spend it with just her. She was confused, though couldn't keep out the suspicion of him only inviting her because of possible feelings. The thought was gone as soon as it came. That's ridiculous, Amy! she told herself. Remember, this is the irritating guy who runs away from you purposely because he doesn't have them! Well...not yet anyway.

The pair made their way to a good viewing place from where the fireworks would be, and settled down. She pulled him in for a hug and snuggled him, and he nervously tried to pull her off, but eventually gave up and let her stay. Minutes passed on by, and the tension began to rise. Other cats sitting nearby were chatting away about resolutions they will never keep, while another group was greeted by another cat to join them for the event. Even with all the commotion, Amy didn't speak, she only stay snuggled into Sonic's chest, thinking silently to herself. The cyan cat himself stared down over her, he seemed to be thinking as well, but he watched her as he did.

The commotion in the other crowds stopped and they all focused on something else. Amy's ear flicked and she glanced around. "What's going on?" she wondered.

"I think it's time," Sonic replied, and sat up, causing Amy to sit up too. The commotion began again, soon the muffled voices faded into a count down. Amy felt her heart sink, and her ears fell back. This is it. Another year wasted, only to be followed by the same thing.. Her heart burned and tore, as the voices from the other groups around them began to chant. "10! 9! 8!" Amy swallowed and shut her eyes tightly, and opened them again. "7! 6! 5!" Her heart began to beat faster and faster by each coming second, the chanting and roaring of the crowd began to grow louder. "4! 3!" Faster and faster, time around her span like her head, making her extremely dizzy. The anticipation began to build higher and higher, to the point she felt she was going to break. "2! 1!" A loud crack bursted into the winter night, lighting the sky like a strike of lightning. Into the air rose a beam of light, and it exploded into a firework, spelling out '2013!' in bright bold letters. Tears edged the corners of Amy's eyes, but before they could fall Amy was jolted to her side by Sonic, he had practically grabbed her. Her eyes were wide with surprise, only to catch a slight look at his face-his face was nervous and fearful. She had only seen this for less than a second before he pulled her back and pressed his mouth to hers. Almost everything around her stopped. She was so confused and shocked, she nearly pulled away from him. Upon realization of how stupid of a choice that would have been, she accepted it and kissed back. She had no idea how long that had lasted. Amy didn't care the slightest bit.

They pulled apart slowly, unsure whether the other would feel like they forced away. Amy didn't open her eyes at first, she was afraid she would wake up in her bed and it turned out to be a dream. Though she felt hot tears pour down her face, now crying for another reason. She tried to stop herself, but to no avail. Her eyes pulled open to see the blue cat still infront of her, now looking at her with a wavy smile. She stared up at him, unable to find words. She pulled herself together and coughed. "Uhm, thank..you.." She said flatly. "Thank you?" He said with a slight tone, a cocky grin peeking from his mouth. "Really Amy?"

"You remembered how I said I had always wanted to share a kiss on New Years..." She couldn't pull her eyes to look at him. "You were there when I was talking to Cream...so..thank you." She finished, patting out her dress to be straight. Sonic practically rolled over laughing. "What's so funny?" Amy growled rudely, unsure how to feel about this. "You really are trying to fool yourself, aren't you Amy? I just kissed you and you think I did it because of New Years?" He spoke through his laughter. What possibly could he find so funny? "Well you did! There's no other reason you would!" Amy protested, clenching her fists. Sonic stopped laughing and simply looked at her with a face of disbelief, still smiling. Amy stared at him some more, trying to process this. Could it be possible he did this because...

Sonic noticed her figuring it out and chuckled. "And I thought you would be the one doing this, not me.." Amy sighed and rolled her eyes in irritation. "So...what you're saying is you love me?" She batted her eyelashes at him hopefully. Sonic didn't respond to this, but looked away as if he was thinking. He shrugged. Amy opened her eyes in sudden surprise. "You don't know!? What do you mean you don't know!?" She exclaimed. Sonic smirked and stood up. He stretched and reached out a hand. He helped her up and still looked at him. He turned away, and began to walk off. "Wait! Sonic!" She cried out, beginning to pace after him, reaching her arm out. He stopped, and looked back. He winked, and said, "You've got a whole new year to figure that out." With that, he dashed off into the night.

Amy stood there in bewilderment. A new year...

"I guess that means this is my year!" She said, pumping her fist. This was the year she would win.
