I find the original... cuter, I suppose. I think it's the general head shape and eyes. One thing that I think I like better is how the mouth is done in the original. I get that the little line below the mouth is supposed the show the lip, but I think me being used to watching anime has made me accustomed to that style of mouth.
Still though, beyond those small personal things, it's obviously a definite improvement. Better proportioned and the shading looks great.

Your thoughts are possibly because I was more heavily depending on the source's art style - since then, I think I've developed more of my own. - thinner head and more realistic proportions. (Like I'd really have to force myself to draw a head that wide nowadays)
I have trouble seeing the positives in the older one since it has so many subtle issues. Kind of looking at it too objectively perhaps? The fact I didn't bother shading it doesn't do it any favors either.
