I like what you're doing. Are you messing with layer opacities or brush opacity? It looks like you're headed in the right direction, at least.
Try mixing in other colors to act as shadows or lights too; I bet you can come up with something even more eye-cathing than this!
Oh, before I go; Be careful with your colors. Everything except for the eyes are all warm colors. If you added a blue, be sure to make sure you bring it everywhere, otherwise it'll look odd.
