Description

It was a beautiful day. Light clouds blocked out the sun occasionally, but nothing to indicate rain or other kinds of precipitation. Very much unlike the storm that had raged the day before. Katara stretched, loosening her muscles to get them ready for the day. She stood up and shook herself, loosening her skin and shaking off any vestiges of sleep that remained in her.

Today she’d go hunting.

Just as she set off, she hesitated. She looked back at the small wooden cabin where her two-legged pack-mate resided. Just yesterday she’d brought back the small fire-haired two-legged from the snowstorm; could she leave him now? He was so fragile… She sniffed, sampling the air and finding the scent of the fire-haired two-legged. He smelt asleep and well.

She huffed, that decided it. She set off.

----------------

It was a beautiful day. Bad weather had kept the pack close to camp the last days and Dante was feeling stiff. He’d collected many feet-furs, but even that got boring after a few days. Hearing foot-falls, he realized a two-legged approached, and a quick inhale told him it was his master. Maybe something interesting would be happening finally? He raised his head, feeling that was enough greeting for the two-legged.

“Hiya Dante, up for a little hunting today?”

Hunting! Now that was interesting!

Dante stood up and stretched out, dutifully allowing the two-legged to saddle him. Now this could be interesting…

-----------------

It was a beautiful day. Tikaani had got up and decided hunting was a good way to shake off the inactivity of the last few days. She purposely strode off into the Alaskan wilderness, passing two of her pack-sisters on the way. Tomkin had – successfully – baited Sialuk and the latter was thoroughly thrashing the former in return; a ‘game’ they’d played almost continuously on the boring days when the weather was bad. Tikaani’d had quite enough of that now though, and she snapped at them, swatting Sialuk off of Tomkin. Sialuk made to attack Tikaani, but a warning snarl made the smaller female think again.

Thus having established order, Tikaani continued her way into the wilderness, fully expecting the other two to follow. Hunting would be a much better use of their energy.

She wondered what they’d run into. She sure felt like a taste of Caribou, but hunting was always a surprise of what they’d manage to bring down. The three of them would no doubt succeed though. There wasn’t much that could escape three Tokotas intent on finding dinner and once focused, Tomkin and Sialuk were very worthy hunting companions.

---------------------

Dante trotted effortlessly through the forest. His nose picked up many scents, but his master didn’t seem too interested in the various small game they crossed tracks with.

“Today we’re hunting for large game, Dante.”

‘Large’; now that was something Dante liked hearing. Big game was always a lot more fun than those slippery little critters with the large ears. Big game was worth the effort of chasing and fighting.

Large game was scarce for now though. Dante put his nose to the ground and in the wind, but nothing fresh that was bigger than a fox. The hours passed and they had a small break at a stream that was running fast enough not to be frozen. Dante lapped up some of the freezing water, but his stomach growled for solid food.

“Here, Dante.”

Dante snapped his head ‘round just in time to snap the thrown meat out of the air. It was the tough smoked kind and was gone in a swallow, but it was something at least. Besides, once they caught themselves some prey, their bellies wouldn’t have anything to complain about anymore.

----------------------

Katara had been roaming the land for most of the day. She’d chased a few foxes half-heartedly, but without really wanting to kill them. Now the end of the day was nearing and her stomach was starting to complain.

Searching earnestly now, she soon came upon the recent scent of a bear. At a trot, she set off after the track. Not half an hour later, she smelt the scent of other Tokotas in the air. Were they hunting too? She hastened her step into a gallop; she would not be beaten to her prey by other Tokotas!

The edge of the woods she was travelling through were nearing when her keen ears picked up the sound of growling and snarling.

No! They were there already!

From the edge of the pine-forest, Katara saw four Tokotas facing off against a large bear. But something was off… Three were clearly dominant Tokotas, yet the third was a submissive and he seemed to be facing off against the bear as well as against the other three!

--------------------

Dante snarled. He’d found this bear first and he would not relinquish it without a fight!

He’d tracked this bear for half the afternoon and even let go an older caribou track to keep on the scent of the bear. Dominants or not; this bear was his by right!

-------------------

Tomkin raised herself up to her full – impressive – height. Who was this upstart to challenge them to rights of the bear? She snarled, for once fully agreeing with Sialuk who looked about as ready to tear into the bear as into the upstart submissive. She sidled up next to Sialuk to coordinate their attack. They only had to wait for Tikaani to signal the attack.

The bear was clearly panicked, snarling at one Tokota, then another. He’d raised himself up on his hind legs once already, then went back down again, clearly unsure how to deal with the Tokota-group.

Tikaani trotted around to the front of the bear, ignoring the submissive and working to get the bear’s attention, so as to let her pack-sisters take the bear down.

All four Tokotas were surprised by the voice of a fifth Tokota howling/snarling as she sprang – previously unseen – from the nearest pines. She was upon the bear and biting down on its spine before the bear had any chance to even turn around.
