‘A good day for exploring.’

That was what Kai had figured this morning. He’d originally intended to go with Katara, but she’d apparently gone solo-hunting, as she was no-where to be found either inside or out of the cabin. So Kai had asked Darius permission to take Ursa.

It was a joy to ride her across the Alaskan landscape. She moved with a grace similar to Katara’s, but whereas Katara’s stride was fluid, Ursa barely seemed to touch the ground as she moved.

Hours passed, and Kai’s stomach announced it was time for lunch.

“What do you say we eat something, girl?”

Ursa huffed in respons and Kai jumped off. Sitting down onto a convenient boulder, he opened his sack and took out the beef jerky he’d packed this morning. Throwing a large chunk to Ursa, he watched her catch it in mid-air before tearing into it.

Vatu had been awoken this morning by the loud and far too insistent female. He’d snarled and bared his teeth to let her know he was NOT interested in whatever it was she wanted. But that didn’t seem to bother her in the slightest. She’d kept talking and poking and prodding, her front paws moving about wildly, until he’d raised up just to let her know up-close he was REALLY NOT interested in whatever.

He snapped at her, his teeth clicking shut just inches from her face. That would teach her.

Only it didn’t…

She kept on chattering as if he’d just stood there without a care in the world. Only then did he get a good look at her and he noticed she was wearing a sack. He cocked his head, for the first time somewhat interested in what she might be wanting.

Among the many sounds she was making, the sounds ‘out’, ‘trek’ and ‘run’ kept on returning.

He lowered his lips, cocking his head the other way. Now going out and roaming the land – admittedly with the chatter-box on his back – might be interesting. He may even get a chance to hunt.

So he’d decided to let her mount him and now they were out and about in the Alaskan wilderness.

It was a few hours later when the female bid him to stop and he allowed her to get off. She settled down on the ground and opened up her sack. She was fortunately fast to get him his meat, so he wouldn’t have to go digging around in the sack for himself. Gobbling up the tough meat within seconds, he suddenly noticed a very enticing smell.

Putting his nose to the wind, he took a deep breath. A female of his own kind – and she seemed to be in heat… interesting.

Hormone-driven, he set off without a second thought to the female two-legged.

Ursa had finished her lunch almost sooner than Kai could get out his own lunch. As he was about to bite into his own jerky, she came up to him and rubbed her head against his chest.

“You’re a sweet girl, Urs.” Kai said, scratching behind her ears, digging deep into her mane. She whined in pleasure, before turning her head in the direction of the open plain they were looking out over. She turned back to Kai and licked his face with her LARGE tongue, before looking away again.

“You want to go explore by yourself for a bit?” Kai asked.

She whined, taking a tentative step into the direction of the flat snowy landscape.

“Alright girl, but don’t stray too far. It’s too far for me to trek back alone.”

She walked back, bumping him in the chest and nearly sending him sprawling off the boulder he was sitting on, before bounding away over the snow.

Ursa dropped her nose to the ground, following the trail she’d smelt that she’d found so interesting. One of those long-eared fast creatures had passed along here not too long ago. It would be a very nice snack to add to her lunch.

She settled into an easy trot, intent on the trail, though always one ear towards the two-legged she’d left behind. If he’d need her, she’d make sure she was back soon.

So intent she was on her double task, she did not notice the other one until she nearly slammed into him head-first.

She was about to greet him, when he beat her to it.

“Hey there beautiful.” He grinned. Something about his grin and his tone made her hair stand on end.

“Hello.” She replied, cautiously. She was still somewhat shocked by his sudden appearance and his aggressive smell did not reassure her.

“I couldn’t help but notice your verrrrry sweet smell.” Still the same grin on his muzzle.

Vatu licked his lips. She was certainly nearing her fertile period, if she was not there already. Very nice indeed.

“Thank you.” She raised her head high, drawing her ears back. She was clearly not interested in him yet. Her smell turned from cautious to hostile as he took a step towards her. “What do you want?” She snarled.

“Easy now girly…”

“I’m no girly!” She barked.

Kai had watched at first in interest, later with mounting worry as Ursa encountered the unknown black Tokota. When she snarled, he did not hesitate and started running towards them. The two circled each-other and he forced more speed from his legs. He didn’t know what he could do, but if things turned bad, as they looked they would, he would at least try something…

Suddenly his feet lost traction and he found himself skidding across the frozen lake he’d known was there, but had forgotten in his rush. Thoroughly winded, he found himself skidding to a halt at the edge of the lake.

“Vatu!” He heard a female voice shout.

So the Tokota wasn’t feral… That was a relief at least.

“Watch out for the ice!” He called towards her. The way she was going, she’d slip on one of the outskirts of the lake.

She neatly avoided the ice and passed him just as he’d scrambled up.

How does the story end, do you think?

The background is a new try-out style. It's a mixture of photo-manipulation and painting. The end-result is more painted than photo though
