Description Sega’s greatest creation and company mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, has had many ups and down over the last three decades. Lately, it’s suffered more downs, but he always comes back to reach the top. This is his evolution through some of his well known and not 100% successful video game series.

All began in 1991 when an unnamed Sonic appeared in the Sega racing game simulator, Rad Mobile as a keychain on the visor of the car. He’s just a small pixelated blue hedgehog with a big head, big eyes, and a tiny body with red shoes and white gloves.

Later that same year, Sega gave this keychain its own game. Named Sonic the Hedgehog, also known as the blue blur, also strangely named Mr. Needlemouse, given an equally proportioned body, and slightly better pixelated graphics, he sets out to stop his evil arch nemesis Dr. Robotnik from turning little forest creatures into robots.

A year in 1992, Sonic is back in his first sequel. Alongside a new sidekick named Miles Tails Prower, who’s a two tailed fox, and with a slightly skinnier looking Sonic with brighter blue fur and a golden buckle on his shoes, they take on Robotnik once again at his non copyright infringement Death Egg. Also fighting a giant robot of the evil fat man.

1993 is the introduction to Sonic’s....girlfriend? Biggest fan? Stalker? All three? Doesn’t matter....first appearance of Amy Rose, back then called Rosey the Rascal, in Sonic CD. Also a metallic version of Sonic created by Robotnik called Metal Sonic. Sonic’s fur is returned to its faded version from Sonic 1, with cleaner pixel graphics, and a new running animation. Also looks slightly more serious with his gaze.

One year later in 1994, Sonic 3 comes out. Sonic’s fur is a darker shade of blue, his shoes aren’t pointed at the tips with a brighter red shading, and his gloves are whiter. Another evolution in advanced pixel graphics, and his expression isn’t as angry as it was in CD. It’s also his first encounter with Knuckles the Echidna, who’s tricked by Robotnik into fighting Sonic after the master emerald is stolen secretly by the evil Doctor. He also gets his hands on the series main focus of power, chaos emeralds, to power his Death Egg once again.

1996 is Sonic’s first experience to 3D. In Sonic 3D Blast, he’s a little chubby shaped, his pointed shoes are back, his head is bigger than his body again, and the graphics are the first blocky style of 3D. At least he’s smiling though as he travels around an island to save a bunch of birds called flickies from Robotnik.

1997 is Sonic’s first 3D Racing Game in Sonic R. Not the best game, with a full on blocky 3D Sonic with pointed quills. But it’ll get better.

1998 is Sonic Adventure! A talking Sonic the Hedgehog with slightly smoother 3D graphics. Also he’s taller and a bit skinnier, with a full on darker shade of blue. His eyes are now an emerald green from his usual black eyes. He teams up with characters throughout the whole Sonic Universe, and for some reason Big the Cat, to locate the Seven chaos emeralds from Robotnik, nicknamed the Eggman. When all seven were collected by a godly alien beast named Chaos, Sonic uses the power of friendship and some other anime cliche to become a non copyright infringement super saiyan to destroy Chaos.

2001 is Sonic Adventure 2, and the introduction to the Vegeta of the Sonic Universe, Shadow the Hedgehog. Also a somewhat sexy batwoman named Rouge. After Eggman finds out the secret to his grandfather’s greatest creation named Shadow the Hedgehog, he awakens the so called ultimate lifeform and joins the evil Doctor on his quest to control a moon blasting space station called the Ark, powered by chaos emeralds. Even though they look nothing alike, Sonic is framed for all of Shadow’s crimes. He’s taller, and his shoes are redesigned to look like quality running sneakers.

In 2003s Sonic Heroes, Sonic is redesigned to look more like his Sonic Adventure self, with better quality and detailed 3D graphics. His classic shoes are back, and he’s slightly smaller. He teams up with Tails and Knuckles to take on Eggman’s newest weapon, encountering three other groups. Some famous characters, some less remembered characters. Eggman is defeated, but it turns out the real threat is Metal Sonic, who turns into a giant robot dragon.....for some reason.

2005 is Shadow’s first and last spinoff game. He fights off demonic aliens that help create him, as he gun blazes his way to learning his true destiny. Sonic appears slightly taller, and either joins Shadow to save the day, or ends up killing the blue blur in the process.

2006....dear god.....2006....no one talks about Sonic’s run in 2006. It’s better you watch the Game Grumps talk about them....but basically it involves a princess, time traveling hedgehogs, a demonic looking hedgehog, and already I’ve lost everyone’s interest. Look Sonic just looks taller and better detailed with longer quills. NEXT!!!!

From 2007 to 2009, Sonic has a bad habit of strange games. He goes into an Arabic world with demons, genies, and stupid incarnations of classic characters. Also he turns into a purple super saiyan. Next he turns into a werewolf with giant long arms, lets forget that, and then he’s kicked back in time to fight black knights. Also for some reason King Arthur is a hedgehog. Like I said, super strange. Only thing that changed is graphics.

2010 was a good side for Sonic. In colors, Eggman creates a space amusement park, but secretly is creating weapons using the power of alien creatures called wisps. Each wisp transformed Sonic to help him take on the many enemies ahead of him, with different color shades from orange to even a dark purple.

In 2011, Eggman figures out time travel, teaming up with his past self to take on Sonic. He attacks on his 20th birthday, trapping all his friends through different points of time. Sonic teams up with his classic 90s self to collect all the chaos emeralds and defeat both evil doctors. Graphics are advanced, showing a better detailed Sonic and 90s Sonic. Also you take on all the major villains over the years, including Eggman’s giant robot, Chaos, Metal Sonic, Shadow, and even that time traveling hedgehog from that terrible 06 game. Yes, even that game is mentioned.

2013 is Lost Worlds, where Eggman teams up with colorful aliens to take on Sonic. Where have I seen this before? Only changes are graphics, taking on the aliens through a more warped green hill zone-like world.

2017 is Sonic Mania, a whole new adventure with better advanced pixel graphics of the classic 90s Sonic. He teams up with Tails and Knuckles along with two lesser known characters to battle Robotnik and his legion of Eggrobos. The events end with 90s being teleported back into the future for Sonic Forces.

Sonic Forces came out the same year as Mania, where a Resistance group, including a new custom made character, 90s Sonic, and Modern Sonic, take on several of Sonic’s past foes to save the world. This includes Eggman, Shadow, Metal Sonic, Chaos, that Lost World Villain Zavok, and a whole new villain named Infinite. Graphics are slightly more advanced.

And that’s the evolution of Sonic! What’s that? I didn’t mention Boom? WHO CARES!

Pretty compact yet accurate representation of the whole timeline there: maybe ya should've just pointed the rushed and cash-grabbing of Forces there as cherry on top of the cake but over all pretty decent job

Now only if someone would find a way to actually help the series getting it's footing back from the current children's programming nightmare ... >p>
