i tagged a shark in the gulf. my cousin hooked a thresher shark and once he brought it close enough i tagged it,

Yes! I got it from an article that was about a team of marine biologists who put a tracker in the shark. When they were putting it back in the water, one biologist wanted to touch it, so he did.
