The only backstory he has is that he's is a almost a legend because he was neve caught by the police.
But there was an idea that he wanted to see snow, just like he's "master" said it had in his homeland (Sam was raised in the streets, but he wasn't alone in the beginning. I'm not sure what happened to his Master but at some time he left/died).
