Description

This is still one of my total favs that I finished off at the end of last year. Looking back, I definitely could have refined the fur more, but I was stuck in the mindset of keeping it 'painterly'.

1 - Simple sketch on separate layer (one of these days this first step might be different )

2 - Under the sketch, chucking down colours, keeping them mostly desaturated to plan out tones and lighting, and super rough suggestion of stripes. With things like this, I always decide lighting straight away. It's not something you really want to be changing later as everything you do relies on this decision.

3 - Getting more tones and colours, sticking with the lighting - saturated bright on the left side, and darker, greyer tones on the right. Starting ontop of the sketch now, as you don't really need it for something simple like this. (but always keep it in case you need to refer back!) I think the 'randomness' in placing the colours really helps here as a base to build on. Don't think too much!

4 - So this is actually super quick. Using a simple fur brush, work ontop with a very slight hue jitter (you can add this in photoshop brush settings) and colour pick from the colours you've already set up as a base. Keep in mind the fur direction and size (thicker longer fur at the edges) and again, don't be too uniform or strict about it. Random variation is good!

5 - Working on top now manually (Never rely solely on a fur brush) building up detail.

6 - Eyes look like a big jump, but they're really not. Darker, desaturated colours around the top, brighter on the bottom where the light hits. A few hints of strokes moving away from the pupil give that iris effect. White highlight - and I always tend to use blues to go with the white as a contrast. Right eye is greyer/bluer as it's in shadow. Going over some of the fur with an overlay layer can really make the lights pop.

7 - More fur refining - final detailing. Sparkle added to really make the eyes stand out. (White dry brush on overlay layer)

8 - Final colour and level tweaks. May have pushed the colours a liiiiiittle much!

Final piece -

I though you pushed the colors on that last step too, but when I rewatched it, it really works quite well! though the yellow is a bit much imo!

FleetingEmber In reply to MeetMeByTheSea [2019-05-22 10:16:37 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, I dunno - I feel like I shouldn't have pushed the blues so much. They're almost fighting equally against the orange, and I think it would have worked better with subtle tones.

MeetMeByTheSea In reply to FleetingEmber [2019-05-22 10:31:29 +0000 UTC]

also, and I'm sorry to spam, if the zebra and the tiger go together as a set, than you might want to stop at step 7. *though the repositioning of the eye was spot on!

MeetMeByTheSea In reply to FleetingEmber [2019-05-22 10:27:54 +0000 UTC]

but I gotta say, the saturated yellows work really well with the tiger's eyes, looks like a reflected sun set almost

FleetingEmber In reply to MeetMeByTheSea [2019-05-22 10:30:40 +0000 UTC]

Ahah, maybe a bit much on the yellows as well then. I tend to make a habit sometimes of over saturating at the end.

MeetMeByTheSea In reply to FleetingEmber [2019-05-22 10:25:49 +0000 UTC]

well, I mean it works well with the Final Image you provided, but that's because the final image is smaller and everything fits easier with the my eyes.

MeetMeByTheSea In reply to FleetingEmber [2019-05-22 10:24:08 +0000 UTC]

exactly, the blues and the oranges have a synergy like you described, but the yellows...
