These are my Character designs propusals for the Fangame MOTHER 4 , I did thse looooooong ago, back when Chaisu was the one in charge of the project. I did these based on the arquetipes they told me (I dont know the story, I just knew Merryl was a Calm girl with psiquic powers and a Book worm, Zack was Travis older brother and a boxer and Leo was a Bum with a secret. I dont even know if the new staff at some point saw those, but since I just finished the current sculptures I decided to share all the design work I did (which was very little)Related content

As "one" of the newer members of the staff I can certainly say that I haven't seen these, so this is quite an interesting find. I really do like the different takes you had for these three, particularly for Meryl.
Also it's nice to hear about the sculptures. If you haven't contacted the team yet I'll be sure to tell them.

I already contacted Max before posting these. I did some purpousals to Chaisu back then, and I bet the characters werent as well defined as today (Chaisu described Leo to me as someone who looks like a bum but he has a past. Now the website describe him as a Biker) I tried to make Maryl the most different possible from Paula and Anna so I went with the bookish girl. But maybe there is no trace of that left on her character.

I'm personally in the dark when it comes to the characters' personalities/hobbies, too. I honestly don't know if Meryl is a bookworm or not.

Think they should had share that with you if you were the character designer, sometimes I feel the team is way to secretive for its own good.

Well I didn't design the characters per se (I had to go off the sprites they gave me, not to say that I haven't designed certain things for the game), but they did provide a little context to how the characters behave for the sake of me having to draw them in certain poses and what not. I was more referring to how the characters would act throughout the course of the story; I want to remain as spoiler free as I can when it comes to that.

Well, they gave me your pictures as reference for the sculptures, so I guessed you were the one who decided the final look.

I did decide the final look for the characters, yes. The only thing I wish I had done was give Meryl some sleeves. Not too long, just enough to cover her shoulders.

Its there any reason for her purple hair? Unnatural hair colors are a strange thing in earthbound, the only one I have seen is Kumatora, and she had the reason of being raised by the magypsy who probably dyed her hair since she was little.

I'm not sure if there is a real reason for why her is purple. It's probably just like that for design purposes only, and it's not as if there's always been a special reason for other characters in Mother to have unnatural hair. Alle and Elmore from Mother 3 are a couple of examples.
