Well, I should probably preface this by saying I know absolutely NOTHING about human anatomy so I expect there'll be a lot of 'IT'S MAGIC OHOHO' involved in my response if you ask why exactly they keep some aspects but not others so bear with me XDDD BUT the main thing that hasn't shut down is the flow of neurotransmitters to the brain and some, SOME! of their sensory function - not touch, but sight and smell. Taste is mostly dead, but some things do still tend to slip past.
And yeah, Chainey's reaction is largely involuntary :> he hasn't quite gotten used to the idea of not-feeling-pain yet
