Description The glimmering light from the silver moon reflected in the mossy green waters of the duck pond. Being the youngest of the group, this enamored me in sort of a child-like way. I watched it, my knees tucked up against my chest as I listened to the sound of soft talking amongst the boys as they began to set up the machine, and the moans of walkers in the distance.
I looked up when I heard the grass swish as if someone was walking towards me. Jude’s flashlight shined in my eyes and I huffed, rubbing them until they stopped hurting.
“Sorry.” She apologized, sitting down next to me. “What are you doing.”
I shrugged. “Same as you, I guess. Waiting.”
She nodded. “I know I probably shouldn’t ask this, but…”
When She trailed off, I blinked at her curiously. “What?”
“Are you excited to maybe get the chance to see him again?”
I instantly knew whom she was talking about, and I sighed. “You’re right. You shouldn’t have asked.”
“I mean, you haven’t seen him-”
“I said don’t ask.” I snapped.
“Sorry.” She said again, tucking a piece of her short brown hair behind her ear. I peaked at her again, and bit my lip. It was so incredibly hard to stay mad at her, she was to innocent for her own good. Sometimes I felt as if she was younger than me.
“It’s fine.” I spoke after a long moment of silence. “Dad hasn’t been dead for long…I just don’t want to think about it too much, okay?”
She nodded in understanding. “Carl said it wouldn’t be much longer.”
I looked over at Carl and Ryan, but they were too busy to notice. “Are you sure this thing is going to work?”
“No.” Jude sighed honestly. “We’ll have to come up with plan B if it doesn’t. Hopefully Ryan is right about this.”
“I trust him.” I said quickly. “He’s smart. He can do it.”
“I do too Sophie, but this…”
“I know, I know, but we should stay positive.”
“Guys!”
We both turned to the boys again, and then got to our feet. Mia, who had been keeping watch at the edge of the field, came running when she heard Carl yell. We gathered around them in curiosity.
“It’s finished.” Ryan announced when we had all arrived.
“It looks like a hunk of junk to me.” Mia didn’t seem so confident in her brother, and in a sense, she was right. To me, it didn’t look that promising, but I knew Ryan better.
“It’s more complicated than that.” Carl mumbled. “This will work.”
“Yeah, and I have six toes on my left foot.” Mia said sarcastically.
“No one cares Mia.” Ryan spat. “Now, Everyone stand back.”
We did.
Ryan knelt down then, fingers hovering by a switch, before he took a breath, and the night sky was filled with light.
