There is a difference between REFERENCE and trace.
YES, I REFERENCED the Chibi Arts, because I happen to think they are adorable.
NO, I did NOT trace them.
You know what good artists can do? Reference really well.
You know what I went to school for and learned how to do really well? Figure drawing. As in the human figure. As in, I'm pretty good at drawing it.Β
You know what they taught us in school? Always reference and never draw from your head, because it's better to draw what you see and not what you think you see. They really drilled that into us.
Tl;DR - there is nothing wrong with using a reference. I've said this over and over again.

That's not how you use references though. You're not supposed to copy a reference to the point that it looks traced. Why even bother calling it your own work?

You know, when a show is animated, there's a whole team of animators who draw in the identical style to get that show done. Did you think it was only one person drawing the entire show?Β
So, with this information, is it really a stretch to think that maybe someone else could learn to mimic that style too? Like seriously? No? Then bug off.

If these were just for fun, i wouldn't say a thing. It's just the fact that someone commissioned you to draw "Sailor Moon chibis" and you went and CLOSELY referenced merchandise.
There's nothing wrong with being able to copy a style. Hell, you could have used the style and drawn them in different poses. But you didn't. You copied the merchandise EXACTLY for profit. That's kind of lame IMO.

She commissioned me for Sailor Moon chibis so she can print them on fabric. She will be selling clothes with my artwork on it, and I will not get a cent from it. She will be profiting from my artwork. Do you find that lame? I certainly don't.Β
And you say "profit" like I'm sitting here rolling in dough. I made $5 per chibi off of hours and hours of work. It's not like it was a "Aw hellz ya I just overcharged some poor schnook like $60 a chibi how can I get out of doing all that work oh I know let's just steal some art and claim it as my own" thing. I put work into these chibis, regardless of how "CLOSELY" I referenced.Β
However, the commissioner didn't have a problem with the artwork I provided, and neither do I. As long as it doesn't bother her or me, I don't see why it should bother anyone else.
Coming to someone's page and accusing them of tracing and stating your opinions as truth when a) they're wrong and b) they're unwanted is really kind of lame, IMO.
