No way man, Your inking is still the bomb! Did you get any good gigs out of NYCon?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

boysicat In reply to FlowComa [2008-05-21 02:35:03 +0000 UTC]

I manage to get selected in DC's talent search and got to talk to one of the editors, but unfortunately for me, they said that inking is one of the hardest field to get into. They liked my work, especially my tonal work, and I should send them more samples but I still haven't done that yet since I haven't done any new stuff to show them. School break just started, I think I'll be able to do some work then I'll show those to them right away.

Anyway, honestly speaking this inks of your really blew me away, you should post more inked work.

FlowComa In reply to boysicat [2008-05-21 03:12:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man, I appreciate it.

Yeah, I had the same experience in San Diego. Got interviewed by Carlin, Bruning and one other guy and got solid feedback but no direct work out of it. Your inks are really good though man, have you tried submitting to Marvel or Dark Horse?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

boysicat In reply to FlowComa [2008-05-21 23:40:38 +0000 UTC]

I only gave my samples to DC when I was at the NYcon. I missed the Marvel talent search, and I actually almost didn't make it for the DC talenst search if it weren't for my brother's tenacity and a referal from Mark Morales and Dexter Vines.

I don't send submissions anymore they always give me rejection letters. Anyway, I'm sure you'll make it in before me because they told me that my biggest chance of getting in to the biz is to switch from ink to pencils, which will never ever happen coz I suck at story telling and composition.

Good luck to both of us I guess.

FlowComa In reply to boysicat [2008-05-22 00:00:49 +0000 UTC]

Have you had any small press stuff published?

Best of luck with it man, maybe you should try some of the smaller companies first, do a solidly kick ass job, then you can hand them a book youve worked on and theyll know that someone gave you a shot and you came through for them.

As for me, Ive done work for Marvel and Dark Horse (Exiles, Star Wars:Force Unleashed, Giant Size Hulk 1) and a number of small press books. I think the next step for me is to start pencilling and inking my own stuff more along the lines of that Killeroo pic. Im just getting started really

The funny thing is, I used to ink David Yardin and Lan Medina's work on District X and Mutopia X. Before that I also did some X force, Stone and Wicked with Whilce Portacio during his Image days. I got a few small press too, but my work there isn't as good compared to the "named" titles.

FlowComa In reply to boysicat [2008-05-22 02:15:33 +0000 UTC]

Ahh cool, I didnt know you'd worked on those books. That would have been a few years back now i guess. I dont know what your situation is but how come it didnt seamroll into more steady work? After having worked on those books I wouldnt have thought youd have to go through the whole talent search thing anymore.

cool, i like the difference between this and the other one(the yellow one) this one is more menacing.

Has a Jae Lee feel to it. Not really digging the foot in the bottom right corner, just doesn't feel finished enough to me. Something else is missing, too. Maybe a post for the sign? It's just floating mid-page. Gotta nice look going, though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

amykins0 In reply to Bright-Raven [2008-05-24 03:43:43 +0000 UTC]

I'm digging the foot in the corner - I think if it was finished like the other foot it wouldn't be as dynamic / have that action to it. NoIce work!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bright-Raven In reply to amykins0 [2008-05-24 05:04:13 +0000 UTC]

Did I specifically say it should be completely finished in the same style as the other foot? No, I did not. There's simply not enough space in the panel to do what I would do, which means I'd probably resize the whole thing in PS (which one could debate it needs anyway, since the corners of the roadsign over overrunning the borders), but by no means was I suggesting he lose the sand splatter effect.

Thanks Rich. Yeah all photoshop, I find it allows me to experiment and be a bit more ballsy with my inks than I would be on paper.
At the same time I try to make it look somewhat traditionally done.

that's gorgeous! If you do go with the skull, maybe a cow skull to really add to that country flavour?

the inks are fantastic, I love the wash technique on his feet. Just beautiful.
