A somewhat belated entry for the Dib X Gretchen Shakespeare Club, after I saw the update here: [link]

The quote is from Shakespeare's Othello, Act Five, Scene Three: I kissed thee ere I killed thee, no way but this! Killing myself, to die upon a kiss.

I chose Othello for two reasons. Firstly, because it's the only one of Shakespeare's plays I've seen performed live. Secondly, because while Romeo and Juliet is all well and good, they are a poor analogue for Dib and Gretchen. Their parents would have no problem with them getting together; Gretchen's parents are highly attractive people whose perfectionistic appearances suggest they would approve of a union to a rich family like Dib's. And Dib's father would be relieved his son was doing something vaguely normal.

They are, I think, more of a gender flipped version of Othello and Desdemona. Gretchen, like Othello, has always been an outsider and never truly in union with someone until Dib. Therefore, the very idea that Dib was cheating on her would, like Othello, send her into a jealous crazed rage. To those of us who have had relationships in the past a break up isn't such a big deal, but to a young person who has never lost love before, it's too much to take. Rationality goes out the window.

And like Desdemona in the play, Dib is not in fact cheating with her. That's what makes this a tragedy. It's all about jealousy taking over. Romances in the Jhonen Vasquez universe are never fairy tale affairs. I know something this dark probably won't win, but it's at least an unusual idea, so I'm happy with the piece as it is presented here. I hope it's been interesting to think about. (Their outfits are period-ish without losing their appropriate color schemes. I think. I tried.)

Invader Zim is owned by Jhonen Vasquez.

Wow, this is very cool! I love Shakespeare, and I like that you chose a tragedy brought about by one of the lovers rather than an outside offense. Good luck in the contest!

*blushes* Thank you very much! Good luck in the contest. I like your entry as well, it's very cute and unexpected since most people would go for the angsty scenes in Romeo and Juliet.

Very interesting! I really like this idea; like you said, it makes sense in an odd way, and it's a nice change from just Romeo and Juliet. It makes me want to enter myself, though I'm not sure that I could pull off anything good.

I'm sure an entry of yours would be interesting and unconventional as always, Joe. In any case, thank you for your compliment. I had a feeling you'd like the less than fairy tale romance implied here.

Well, I wouldn't have minded fairy-tale either, as long as it was something clever.

I'm incapable of being clever. I can only manage to be dark. DX XD

Thank you! There is a little bit of dark humor to Dib's expression, which is fitting since the show itself was full of mean humor. Thank you too for letting me enter kind of late-ish, it's very appreciated.

I know. But it feels to me like I entered late because other people already had good entries up. And I guess I'm a little nervous because I haven't entered any contests before, even online. Sorry if I'm being a little overbearing.

Oh, neat! I had no idea there was a Zim/Tenn club. Thank you so much for linking me to it. It's really nice to know I'm not the only one that ships them.

Well aside from Tak Tenn is the only girl Irken. And I always thought if the show had continued that they might develop a thing for eachother after all according to the plot of the last episode Zim came to save Tenn with Skoodge and the other Irkens. They could have developed something. CURSE NICK FOR CANCELING INVADER ZIM WHY!!!

It's sort of sad that it got canned, yes, but Jhonen has gone on the record saying the working conditions were awful and he couldn't keep going. And if they're going to treat their show's creators like that, they don't deserve him. Besides, there's always fanfic to pick up where the show left off.

Didn't you know that soapywaffle.com and the people who run it are working to animate the unaired Invader Zim episodes?

FluffleNeCharka In reply to invderzimfannumber1 [2011-07-28 20:04:27 +0000 UTC]

No, I hadn't heard that. It seems... pointless. The episode's audio is out there, you can listen to it and close your eyes and picture it. The amount of time and effort it would take to animate unaired episodes or worse to give audio for unrecorded episodes seems excessive and odd to me.

Wow this is awesome. I'm glad to see a Shakespeare inspired piece based on Othello, and I'm not just saying that because Othello was my favorite Shakespeare play.
Dont be so down on your work. If it's a competition involving anything created by Jhonen Vasquez you'd think the more unusual pieces would have an advantage.

FluffleNeCharka In reply to IMMenendez [2011-07-27 14:36:29 +0000 UTC]

Annnnd cue me blushing profusely on my end that someone likes this. Othello is so far my favorite of Shakespeare's works, though I haven't yet read through all of them and they are very densely constructed works.

I'm hoping that the fact I didn't choose the much better known Romeo and Juliet will at least garner some interest. Although I have to say I'm surprised that in a Jhonen Vasquez based fandom there aren't more dark pieces for this pairing. (Though to be fair it's still more healthy a relationship than most for this show, scarily enough.)

Thank you for listening to my rambling and looking at my work.

Maybe it's just me, buuut, honestly I'd say you've got a better chance using non Romeo and Juliet pieces. If the competition is a Shakespeare quote inspired drawing of the pairing then...well, there are going to be a lot of Romeo and Juliet quote pieces and that would drive me insane.

FluffleNeCharka In reply to IMMenendez [2011-07-28 01:18:08 +0000 UTC]

I agree. Shakespeare has many good works to draw from besides Romeo and Juliet; however, as that is by far the most well known, I can't fault people for going with what they know. I know I personally wouldn't want to do an entry based on something I hadn't seen myself.
