A few years younger than Dylan is Prince Simon. He was never taught magic before but once his gift stirred to life inside him, and discovered his connection to one of the ancient noble families the royal family his father the king included tried to find tutors but none was able to teach him much. Dylan was assigned to guard him at one point but not to teach. But eventually Dylan stopped giving a crap and taught him anyway. Or helped teach him. Being a member of the ancient families mean your magic doesn't work like others do, so learning traditionally is exceptionally difficult. Not due to lake of skill or talent, but simple their "wires" so to speak doesn't work the same as other peoples would. And you can see his circle as well.
