Description No shading OR background? Lame, I know. But this picture has been sitting around on my computer for over a month, and it's never going to get shaded, so I decided to post it with the flat colors rather than letting it rot as it otherwise would.

This is another illustration for the Banjo-Tooie group fanfic I'm involved in, The Jinjo-Minjo War. This is actually the first time I've illustrated a scene I wrote...

This is actually a flashback... when our favorite Jinjo King is kidnapped and tied up in a forlorn cavern, and he believes his people to all be in immense and imminent peril, he has a breakdown and lapses into a dream-state of sorts. He has several flashbacks, the first of which features him as a very young child, with his mother, the former Queen.

But now he was with his mother again, staring out over a large stretch of the village, the cluster of houses down towards the sandpit and the surrounding cliffs.

“Isn’t it a wonderful place, Jingaling?” asked his mother, looking down at him lovingly. The boy just nodded raptly, taking in the magnificent scene.

“Someday you will look out for this village,” she told him, “and all of its people.”

The boy’s demeanor changed. He seemed concerned, and turned to look upwards at his mother. “It’s so much to take care of!” he said with a worried frown. “What if I can’t do it?”

The Queen picked up her son and held him. “You can do it,” she told him with a gentle smile. “I can help you on the way, and teach you many things, but someday you must be the King on your own. I know you can do it.”

“But what if I’m a bad king?!” he asked, evidently troubled in the earnest way of children. “What would happen to everybody?”

Of course, he is having this flashback because he feels that he has been a bad king after all, despite his mother's faith in him; that he has failed his people.

The Jinjo Queen was kind, gentle, and melancholy, and very fondly attached to her son. However, that doesn't mean she was restrictively overprotective of him. She was very wise... but unfortunately, she did not have as long in the world to guide her son as either of them would have expected. And now, in these times of war for which he feels so ill-suited and misplaced as a leader, he has no guide...

Jinjos/King J (c) Rareware
The Jinjo Queen (c) Me, I guess
The Jinjo/Minjo War (c) the fine folks of the BT forum at Gametalk, which has been down for like a week and a half, and I'm going crazy.

(PS: He's so cute with his liddle pink slippers! XD)

Poor Jingaling is right. Emotional turmoil! And he's got much more of it to go through, once he meets Kiva again...

"Guys and Girls and People of All Ages and What Not:
To ensure the best possible GameTalk, we're going to reopen on August 1, 2008. Please understand that while we love to serve your needs responsibly it has become impossible to do so up to our desired standards without pausing to invest significant time, energy, and talent, which we are currently doing.

More news and info will be added here daily."

There, now we know...-sigh-

Should we find another forum temporarily?

And have you heard about the Chrono Trigger Novel Project? It blows my mind! They've already got 300-something pages written! (that's Millenial Fair through Magus battle)

They don't let you read anything past 'The Queen is Gone!' though...they're trying to get publishing rights from Square, so they've got a petition. (4000+ signatures)

Hmm... I dunno, we should probably just wait. The story was slowing down anyway, so perhaps it's best that we all take a hiatus, so that we can approach it with new vigor when Gametalk returns.

No, I haven't heard about that. Sounds awesome. I'd sign the petition...

True...I just happened to be in the middle of dinner with Jingaling, so...it was an awkward cut-off point.

Have you made the Jinjo Village account yet?

If you search CTNP (or Chrono Trigger Novel Project) on Google, it should show up as the first or second choice.

When I saw the title, I was hoping it would featire Queen Zeal and Janus. XD

However, this is still cool, too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fluffycatgirl In reply to manaphy87 [2008-07-09 01:37:36 +0000 UTC]

Heh, that picture would've had quite a different mood indeed. Zeal is just the opposite kind of queen and mother. Gah, she is so... EVIL. I just can't accept someone who treats her children as pawns.

Studies have shown that boys who grow up under the greedy claw of a cruel, heartless, power-crazed mother have a much greater chance of growing up into vengeful wizards!

It's extremely satisfying to have Magus in your party when you go back to destroy her.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

manaphy87 In reply to fluffycatgirl [2008-07-09 02:43:05 +0000 UTC]

Yes. It also makes it play Magus' theme during the battle, instead of the normal boss music that plays.

Also: here's the quote he says:
"Zeal. A pitiful woman duped by Lavos. I'll end this all here and now!"

-Magus

(I may have paraphrased, I don't know it word for word.)

fluffycatgirl In reply to manaphy87 [2008-07-09 03:51:02 +0000 UTC]

At least he didn't say "MOMMEEEE! YOU NEVER LOVED ME!"

manaphy87 In reply to fluffycatgirl [2008-07-09 04:31:49 +0000 UTC]

XD

I can't imagine Magus saying that!

By the way, as Janus, he said something far deeper.

"She's NOT our mother! She looks like her, but inside she's changed..."

fluffycatgirl In reply to manaphy87 [2008-07-11 19:16:52 +0000 UTC]

fluffycatgirl In reply to artiantil [2008-07-10 21:15:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Humba Wumba must have created herself a youth potion, because she's magically regressed ten years in age. As for the king, I'm sure they'll change his outfit a bit, but it probably won't be anything major. However, I'm sure he'll suddenly have acne- I mean, spots, since all the other Jinjos have developed them. Perhaps he'll have something even more intriguing, like stripes.

Umm... what's your overall opinion on Nuts and Bolts from what you've seen so far?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fluffycatgirl In reply to artiantil [2008-07-11 15:32:00 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I'm a supporter. Sure, I would have loved a more traditional platformer, but I was able to accept the surprising change very well. I think Rare's ideas are unique and look really fun, and that this game will inspire and require the player's creativity, and allow for tons of freedom. And as for the aesthetics of the game, it seems to totally have the Banjo charm and humor, even with a new style. Plus they're putting so much in there for the old fans. Every time they release something new, I get more and more excited.

Though I'll admit, the fact that Kazooie carries around a wrench at all times totally defeats the purpose of her being a bird in a backpack. And it's hard for me to adjust to Mumbo being a mechanic. Of course, Rare has the right to do whatever they want with their characters, and he's obviously still the same ol' Mumbo we know and love, but his new job seems so unlike him.

Of course, I can definitely understand the opinions of those who don't like the new direction, and I'm not going to argue about it.

artiantil In reply to fluffycatgirl [2008-07-11 15:41:55 +0000 UTC]

You make really good points. I think the one thing that grabs me is the loss of Kazooie's moves. I would have loved to see some Kazooie action x3 ...but Gregg Mayles even said that almost 80% of the game centers around vehicles

But hey I'm willing to give it a shot

The Queen looks very cool and indepentant... I like how you did the female version of the Royal clothing, and the crown...

But yeah, what´s wrong with GT? I want to get back! Grr...

fluffycatgirl In reply to Sunjinjo [2008-07-07 03:42:07 +0000 UTC]

I knooooow

Thanks! Yeah, I think the crown is passed down through the male rulers, and the female rulers get more of a tiara-type thing. She wouldn't look very dainty with that massive crown on her head, heh.

I don't know ;_; I check every day to see if it's back up... whoever exploited those glitches must have really screwed the system up somehow...
