Description *WARNING SCIENCE FILLED DESCRIPTION IMMINENT*

Kelkai, or solar sailors, are huge, peaceful wyvern-like creatures that can be found drifting serenely between the stars. They seldom eat, getting most of their energy from the light of the stars they circle. They can photosynthesise, because they have chloroplasts that are reminiscent of brown algae, with a double membrane that suggests they were originally free-living eukaryotes. Contrary to popular belief, most of the photosynthesis takes place in the wings, not the frills on their backs. Their chloroplasts have loads of the accessory pigment Fucoxanthin, which gives them their brown colour. Because they live in the vacuum of space, they are exposed to very high light intensities, which would damage unprotected chlorophyll irreversibly. The green is just for display, it plays no role in photosynthesis.
Because they get most of their energy that way, they don't eat much, getting the protein they need from small (comparatively) asteroid-dwelling crustaceans. As a result, they only have molars for crushing their prey's shells, having no need for canines or incisors. They are ill-equipped for combat of any sort, having no natural weapons and fragile bodies; they rely on their size rather than anything else for defence. They can't enter any atmosphere, because they would be crushed by the pressure but it allows them to survive in the vacuum of space without decompressing.
They are sexually dimorphic, with only the males having the large back crests. Females have smaller, tendril-like appendages instead.
They rely mostly on scent to find food, and are one of the few animals that can smell nitrogen. Their three eyes are sensitive to ultraviolet, but they have poor reception to the red end of the spectrum.
They are very long-lived, living for centuries. They reproduce only once or twice in their lifetimes, migrating to binary systems to spawn.
These wyverns get their common name from the way that they travel through space, because there is no air they move by exposing their wings to the stars light and using the force created by light hitting them to fly. It's a slow way of moving, but it requires hardly any energy so it's very efficient. The forewings are normally mostly exposed, the shorter hindwings are used for steering. They obviously can't land, so they sleep in space, curling up their wings once they've reached a stable orbit. The 'hands' on their hind legs are not strong or sensitive enough to be used for holding prey, they are only really used for holding onto asteroids while they search for food.

Now I've got that out of my system, I'll start talking about the drawing itself, which to be honest, disappointed me. The lineart's really good, the background came out really well, but I rushed the focus of the picture and as a result it looks much worse that I'd hoped it would be. I think I should have waited until today rather than trying to do it in short bursts whenever I had a free second.
That aside, I bet you're all wondering why, after so long drawing mostly digital fantasy things in forests, I've suddenly decided to spam you guys with traditional space dragons? I think the answer to that can actually be attributed to two factors, illness and Mass Effect. I'll leave you work out which one is responsible for the space aspect
I really enjoyed creating this species, and since I've now written a massive description about them and delved into their biochemistry I might as well use them. I'm considering making some adoptables of this species, as well as doing a bit of work on the other species in this ecosystem (because I just can't leave such things alone) what do you guys think?

If you're wondering, an example of a female would be:

I can't believe I've got this far without mentioning that face XD It amuses me greatly.

I'm not going to make you read any more, but I would like to know if anyone actually read the sciency bit at the top, since I did spend a while working it all out.

I read the science-y thing! Actually, it made me pause and look at this one longer than I did at the female one, which I came across first. Very interesting! I like how much thought you put into the species. Reminds me of some sci-fi book I read about space dragons this one time... Very different dragons though.

Thanks! I'm really glad you liked it, to be honest I'm surprised you did, I wasn't really expecting anyone to XD It's wonderful that you did though
I think I enjoyed that more than the painting to be honest, I love designing species and thinking about the under the skin, bare bones of how they work.
I'm pleased, it's not uncommon for sci-fi books to have space dragons of some sort, but I'm glad they're not exactly the same.

Thank you! The colours are kind of similar, aren't they? I hadn't noticed that until you mentioned it XD

Thanks again! ^^ It's funny how you can draw these things and not notice... I gave one of my dragons a Me gusta face and I only realised when someone pointed it out XD

Awww wow, awesomeness! Seriously though, how did you do that background? TELL MEEEE
As always the colours are fantastic and I love the wing design, ir reminds me of those dinosaurs, archeopteryx possibly.. I can't remember if thats the right name.

It's funny you should ask that, since it was you that inspired it XD Basically, I splatted lots of the sorts of colours I thought should go in each area in a very watery wash, keeping away from where things were going to go, then once that was dry I did a similar thing on top, but keeping further back so some of the last wash was still visible. Oh, and I added a ton of salt to the last layer XD
Thank you! I think Pterasaur is probably the one you're thinking on, since that's what I based the hindwings on. Archeopterix was the first with feathered wings, so it's probably not that you're thinking of.

Ahh awesome. I'll have to try it next time
Yes I think your'e right there. Things with long names were never my strength which thinking about it, shows up in my OC's names, all the ones I came up with myself are rather short, Sika, Legs, Haai..... XD

I'd be thrilled if you did, I'd really like to see how it comes out with your style.
I quite like long names, even if I don't always remember them XD

This looks amazing. I can also tell you put a lot of effort into this and the description. And if you were wondering, I DID read it all.

At the curling up to sleep part, I literally went "aww". They must look like dormant shooting stars...or asteroids themselves.

Thank you many times, for liking the painting and reading the description I did spend some time looking up some of the facts to check if it would be possible (of course there were other areas where I decided not to look too deeply in fear of destroying all hope of making it realistic, but that's what you get for designing space dwelling dragons)

Thank you! I'd imagine it acts a bit like camouflage, they'd look like bits of rock or other uninteresting debris so any predators wouldn't think to attack them. That's the idea anyway.

You did a really good job. I love coming up with descriptions like those, so I know the feeling all too well! It's hard to keep things perfectly realistic in anything anyway. I mean, you really need a good amount of imagination anyway in order to think of creatures living in the emptiness of space. c:

Still, you really managed to make it unbelievably realistic with the whole chlorophyll part. I mean, I can TELL you did your research.

Are you planning on drawing their predators soon?

Fluffysminion In reply to Keberyna [2012-04-18 20:02:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's my favourite part of coming up with new creatures. Sometimes I think I write sci-fi just so I can come up with more creatures XD

Thank you! Well, it was an interesting line of enquiry, so I couldn't just let it drop XD I had to keep going until I'd got it all sorted out in my head. Believe it or not, there's more there that I forgot to write down, so I expect I'll finish that later.

I was intending to draw them in the background of this painting, but it was too cluttered so I didn't. I'll probably be drawing a pack of them as my next space painting

Hahah, can't blame you there! I do the same. XD

I believe it! Even then, you did a swell job. I'm still up for hearing the other stuff you have in mind. These crits are just too interesting to pass. c:

Whoop whoop! I'd love to see them.

I'm glad I'm not the only one

Thanks! I've written most of it down now, it's on my tumblr. I think that's it all for now though, unless I need more information for somthing I'm happy to leave it as it stands.

I'm writing about them now, I'm quite happy with the design They've turned out very different to what I thought they were going to look like, but I'm happy with them none the less.
