Description So, I finally decided to draw the characters from Steel spine, after about forty chapters XD This is what Steel spine would be like if =Amadoodles was writing it, although this version has fewer bows than she'd like.

I would like to thank =Rusty002 and *Keberyna for helping so much with this, you made such a difference.

I did make a few mistakes, Chris is missing his underbelly scales (he was nearly missing some toes but I fixed that) and I'm still not that good at human faces, but I'm improving.

I forgot to mention that this was drawn for the #Thought-Up monthly prompt: Frenemies Forever
I thought these guys fitted that very well indeed, considering everything that Colin and Alex put Chris through.

I used some tumblr tutorials for the shading and the suit, although I didn't follow them exactly I did find them very useful. Here's a link to the blog they're on: [link]

Thanks! And yes, that's exactly what he's thinking, those people haven't exactly been nice to him, so naturally he's suspicious when they offer him cupcakes.

That's a smart creature! Never trust someone who randomly gives you cupcakes, no matter how tasty it looks XD

Yeah, he knows better than to accept them without question.

Nice work!

The dragon (?) is very well done. Great job on his facial expression - it's clear he's suspicious! It is not just the facial expression either, the body language translates very well. Great work with the lighting too and I like the colors you've used for him. Great work on the scaling - the details are amazing.

Now you have said that you are still working on human faces so it's good you recognize they need improvement. For the man crouching, the top of his head needs to be more rounded.
For the man standing, his jaw line goes too far back and he too needs more of a dome above the forehead. The bodies of both men are very good (save for the crouching man's arms, they are a tad short). I would also recommend darker shadows beneath everyone with more of a gradient because right now it looks as everything is floating a bit.

Overall, well done! These are all my opinions and these suggestions do not come from an expert so you are welcome to disregard what you don't agree with. I hope I was a little helpful though

Thank you!

He's some sort of dragon-thing anyway. XD I'm really pleased to hear that, I know I struggle with drawing emotions, and it's something I made an effort with on this one, so I'm glad it paid off. It's good to know the colours and lighting work, I tried out a new method of shading and I think it really worked here. Thanks a lot for the feedback about the colours, I wasn't sure if I should change them or not since this is the first time I've drawn this character, so that's very useful to know.

Yeah, faces are not something I draw often. I can see what you mean now, it is kind of flat. I think that's me being used to drawing animals with long muzzles, I'm used to ending the jaw right at the back. But thinking about it, I think I understand it a little more, so thanks for that. The arm thing's something to remember as well, I'll try to be more careful of that next time. I see what you mean about the shadows though, it seems quite obvious now you've pointed that out. I've just darkened them a bit, so it should be a bit better from that perspective now.

Thank you! That was really helpful. Thanks again for doing that for me

ah yes, I can see how drawing animals with long muzzles could affect how you draw human faces. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it - just practice! and much better with the darkened shadows

you're welcome glad I was of help!

Yes, I've been doing some practice sketches so hopefully next time I'll be better.
I'm glad it made a difference.

You were very helpful, thank you.

THIS was the man in the suit you were talking about! It turned ot so well! I just love the shading, and how the character is appearing into the light. FFFF It's so awesome!

Yes, the only one so far that hasn't become Slenderman.
Thanks, I'm still not too happy with the people but it's something to work on. I've been sketching faces since then so hopefully next time they'll look better. I found a new way of shading which is just great, I'd never thought of using gradients but they work really well.

This turned out really well. That scaling is truly epic!
I have got to read this now! Really intrigued.

Thank you! I actually quite enjoyed that part, although I'll have to see if I feel the same next time I try it XD
I'd love it if you did, although there is quite a bit of it, so be warned.

Forgot to mention. I did start reading this. It was good but around chapter 10 the story really picks up and hooks you!
I kind of lost my place though, so I'll have to figure out what chapter I'm on now.

You did! That's wonderful! I do need to go through the first bit, the whole thing's really a work in progress so there are still changes I need to make.
Well I'm incredibly glad you are reading it, I really hope you like the rest of it.

"Dragon cupcakes, now with 50% more meat!"

I'd imagine Chris more robotic-ish due to the spine being robot itself, but i guess this is what you had in mind.

And you're a lot better at drawing people then me, and other who can barely draw a decent face. I'd end up making the people face the wrong way, or atlest make them look funky.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fluffysminion In reply to Maverickhunter2 [2012-09-02 12:08:41 +0000 UTC]

Really? That's interesting, I had originally imagined him with more metallic components, but I changed it to make it more realistic. Voice would have made him more of a cyborg, but there wasn't enough metal available, so she gave him scales instead. There was some metal there, but in order to make functioning mechanical limbs she'd need a wider range of metallic elements to make the right alloys. However, Chris is still full of nanobots, which can still change him. And there are more internal changes that aren't visible but are still there.

Thank you, although I did have a lot of help with this. I can make them look vaguely human now, but I can't draw faces that are recognisable as different people. Hopefully I'll be able to bring my people up to the same standard as my other drawings if I keep working on them.
I'm sure you're not that bad

Waaah, you finished it! This looks awesome Fluff. I really love the coloring and shading on Chris. Is that a gradient I spot? It's really well executed. I also love how you shaded the hair on the guys. You should give yourself more credit for drawing the guys, they look pretty good!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Fluffysminion In reply to Keberyna [2012-08-30 13:21:59 +0000 UTC]

I did! Thank you, they weren't the colours I first thought of choosing but I'm glad I went with them anyway. Yes, I did use gradients, I found a tutorial and suddenly realised how awesome they are. I now understand how people can have only one set of shadows but it still looks fully shaded.
Thanks, I still want to improve though, they're a lot better than my earlier attempts but I'm not there yet.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Keberyna In reply to Fluffysminion [2012-09-15 20:19:15 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I agree. I should probably try that technique someday. It seems like a quick but effective way to incorporate shading into a piece. Plus it just looks downright awesome, especially for a dramatic piece like this.

It looks fine. We all strive to improve either way, so no worries! You have a pretty good grasp right now, especially since you don't draw people too often. You should feel proud.

Fluffysminion In reply to Keberyna [2012-09-16 08:37:06 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I quite like it now, but I feel I'm probably going to change soon, I never seem able to stick with anything.

Thanks, I have drawn some people that I'm more pleased with, but I haven't got a scanner right now so I can't show you :/

Thanks! I had different colours in mind originally, but I changed my mind because I felt they went together much better. And the scales took a long time to do, but were definitely worth it. I quite enjoyed doing them too, although wether I'll feel that way next time I draw them is debatable XD
