Description I was at a local rodeo yesterday.
Yeah, lots of wannabe cowboys, and even some wild bulls to ride(the younges bull rider was about 16 and nearly got trampled on), but I reckon this is the most impressive shot.
With a 400mm lens from quite a distance...

poor thing yeah rodeo is indeed animal abuse.. how can they do those things to a horse? while most of those cowboys do have their own horse of wich they take very good care..

.... I hate people who DON'T know what a rodeo is about.
It's a sport based off of good horsemanship and how to handle animals on a ranch.
The stock animals are taken fantastic care of- this was probably caused by the horse him/herself- and if anyone is caught abusing an animal they are shunned from the Rodeo world.

None of the animals are forced do do what they do and animal stock works maybe 8-9 seconds A YEAR.

Stop judging on just looks >.>

Rodeos = animal abuse

Every animal you see in a rodeo is abused.

Lies.
Pure, and complete lies.
Learn what you're talking about.
If you are caught abusing an animal at a rodeo (these animals are not forced and treated like kings and queens because good rodeo stock is hard to find- a good bucking horse is worth more than any car) you are shunned from the rodeo community.

That was.. a long time ago. But I realize that I posted it online for all to see, and that others may see it long after I've forgotten it.

I believe everything you have told me, and you should be happy to know that I've educated myself (and other people have educated me ). I try not to run around spewing presumptuous crap quite so much now days.

Well, that's good ^^
I just got so upset after trying to research some things I may need to know for another rodeo event because people are so uneducated about rodeos >.>
Because of my future college's rodeo, I'll be able to go to college on a rodeo scholarship. I just need to be in two events. One is barrel racing for sure because my horse loves it and I love it, and I may try bronc riding because it's the event that most leans in favor of the horse, plus I can't rope for crap (besides, my friend had a cow break his finger when he was trying to rope)

It's difficult to be educated on rodeos when you aren't directly involved in them. Basically all your average person knows is what commercials and movies tells them, and that's not much. You have to get out there and do your own research, and that's hard to convince people to do sometimes. ><

Ah, it may be fun to ride a bronc. I hope you get to do that someday! Barrel racers always look nice and healthy. I hope to own a couple of horses later on.

I worry now more about dressage sort of shows where horses are taught to sit and whatnot.. though I don't have a formed opinion there yet since I don't know if those animals are abused or not for sure.

rchcc122 In reply to zarhx [2010-03-21 00:50:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I understand that sorta, but I've been riding since I was two so I have a whole different source of knowledge

And I figure my horse was very green once and liked giving me a challenge, how much more difficult can another horse be? Haha.
And yeah, barrels is a fun sport =03 You should! They're great therapy animals (my mom uses ours for equine therapy).

Hm, a horse sitting isn't bad for it. My trainer trains them to do stuff like that too. But the main difference between western and English is that English is a bit more up tight, so the animals are a bit... prancier if that makes any sense. I rode English for a while. But I prefer western because it more has what I'm interested in.

I'm definitely wanting to own horses. I've always been drawn to horses, but I've only had the pleasure of riding a handful of times.

It's not so much THAT they're sitting that I've heard is bad.. it's HOW they get them to. I know not all horses who are trained to sit, etc. are abused, I just wonder if the general English riding group cares more about the 'pranciness,' like you said, or the horses' well being.

I've always loved riding, and I love horses, and so that's mainly why it upsets me when people automatically mark rodeo as something that's 'bad' and something people do if they don't care about horses.

And I'm not too sure. But I do know my friends who ride English treat their horses very well. So I think it may just be a select few giving the rest a bad image.

I shouldn't have jumped to suck an assumption. I understand why you jumped at me. Some other people did just the same thing (that's no the only anti-rodeo comment I've made), and after a few typed out lectures from people, I thought maybe I may be wrong.

You're probably right. It's like how people are wanting Pit Bulls and other dog breeds banned.. what they don't realize is how it's the OWNERS, and even if all those "famously bad" dog breeds were illegal, bad people would find other dogs to fight and raise cruelly.

Well, it's life, you live and learn =03 And you learned, which is great.

And yeah, I have a pit bull actually, and she's the sweetest dog ever. She's afraid of everything, but she's very huggy and needy XD

The reason pit bulls are so easy to take advantage of is because they'll follow your every word if you show them an ounce of kindness.

Most of those "bad breeds" are incredibly smart and loyal. I've never had a Pit Bull personally, but we have a doberman and people get angry when I allow her near them to say hello sometimes! I just roll my eyes when they start yipping at me.

rchcc122 In reply to zarhx [2010-03-25 02:44:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, exactly! It's prejudice and lies that creates the hatred. My pit bull is the sweetest thing ever. And my friend's German Shepard is incredibly loyal- and that's what makes them so dangerous to people, if you attack or threaten their owner, they'll attack you. But that's not a bad thing if the animal knows friend from foe.

Not like Spanish bull fighting. In Spain the bulls are often killed. Rodeo stock in America are not killed for sport, and most deaths that do occur are freak accidents.
If they get cut up, over 90% of the time it's cuz they get kicked or bit by another horse, or scratched on the fence. Horses bleed a lot from minor cuts. I know, my horse regularly cuts herself on the fence on accident, and she bleeds a lot.
That is a wonderful shot by the way.

Its a great capture.
More than likely he's hit something or another animal has kicked him, people can be brutal and stupid, but it looks like an animal inflicted wound. I've been to a lot of rodeos and usually if the person does something on purpose, or if its caused durring an event they get fined big time! And pretty much the saddle broncs and bareback horses are already wild and are not broke to ride which is why they even have that sport, they arent planning on breaking the horse. If this did for sure come from another animal, it happens in the wild all the time too.

Bucking horses like to buck. They just let a horse do what they want and put a rider on to see if he can stay on.

AFFGM [2006-01-17 17:48:22 +0000 UTC]

Great capture. At first I thought the blood was inflicted by a person, but on closer inspection it looks like another horse kicked him. You can see a curve on the forehead where a hoof would have struck, going over the bridge of the eye.
But then a again, I could be wrong. I wouldn't put it past some people to do that to their horses.

flycow In reply to AFFGM [2006-01-17 18:05:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure it was either by another horse or a bull.
They breed serious rodeo bulls here, one of them trampled my neighbour in the face jsut before that rodeo.
He survived with a lot of luck.
Rough sport, but you know, I think people , espc, men need the aggression and the terror. The bitterness is missing in our lives.

"men need the aggression and the terror. The bitterness is missing in our lives." there are so many other ways to feel terror and aggression not to mention bitterness without making animals part of it.. I always thought "cowboys" like fighting? now thatΒ΄s something youΒ΄ll find in many sports
