Description

I would make or use a template but I'm lazy and I don't feel like doing that right now. I'd rather just get right to it and I like having this image of - as of late February 2018 - my favorite characters. The number isn't 10 but 12 because... I want it to be. Also there's some series where I like even more characters, like Weiss, Blake, and Yang from RWBY I also really like and would be on here if it was more than 12. Anyways rather than have people guess whose who...

EDIT: Updated it. Date is 4/23/2019 and some of my views on some characters has kind of changed. It happens as time goes on altho interesting who remains and such.

I. Ruby Rose (RWBY) - although she and Rukia both are like my top favorite character, Ruby as a heroine and protagonist of her series just really appeals to me and is my absolute favorite character. She's goofy and quirky and funny but also kicks ass and likes to fight monsters. But she gets that it's about protecting people first and wants to be a hero for that reason but also has her own weaknesses to overcome yet her heart is strong enough to do so. Also I just really love Ruby's outfit; her combat skirt and boots in black and her red hood is just both cool and cute and pretty unique as far as heroines go. Her bond with her friends and teammates and how she's overall jovial but not naive makes her intriguing as she acknowledges enemies POV that the world can suck, but that's all the more reason for her to punch back and do what she can to be a hero to make life better and do good. And honestly that's something very solid and what most protagnosits / heroes should aspire towards and why Ruby is my favorite character.

II. Star Butterfly (Star vs. The Forces of Evil) - Next to Ruby Rose, Star is the fasted character to become a favorite character - it actually (like Ruby) only took the first episode of her show. Star is bright and energetic but also a bit crazy and adventure loving. To the point where Star has to be sent away from her home on Mewni to another dimension - Earth. Hi-jinks ensue as this magical princess takes on the world. I love though how Star evolves over her time on Earth and through her friendship with Marco. She's still the goofy energetic bundle you meet at the start but definitely grows from Episode 1 to the most recent Season. It's also pretty cool how joyful she is and committed she is to being both a kick ass princess but also not shying away from femininity - Star proves you can have both, she is both awesome and strong but also loves her fashion sense and cute magical familiars at the same time. She might even be the best Disney princess imo.

III. Lucario (Pokemon) - Lucario is quite simply my favorite Pokemon and I find to be a pretty cool character too. The two specific versions are the Lucario who appears in "The Subspace Emissary" story mode of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and the movie version from "Lucario and the Mystery of Mew". In the movie that Lucario is kind of a loner and a bit antisocial but grows to trust people while the one from Brawl is kind of a mysterious fighter who is training atop of a mountain top when you find him as Meta Knight. Then there's a battle where you can fight either as him or Meta Knight, resulting in the two becoming friends. Then Lucario has a funny moment where with Meta Knight runs into Solid Snake - whom he finds hiding beneath his trademark cardboard box, leading to the trio becoming allies. I've always liked how most Lucario are heroic and instinctively on the side of good and kind of gain prominent roles in Pokemon media, as main or supporting characters. But the Smash Bros Lucario who fights fighters from so many series might be my absolute fav version. Also he's a cool bad ass Pokemon at the end of the day.

IV. Paddington Bear (Paddington) - WATCH THE PADDINGTON MOVIES. Paddington Bear as a character is just so sweet and honestly kind and we don't really get characters like him any more. Paddington is initially a bear living in south america when circumstances lead Paddington to go to London in search of a new home and a family. From there his story in the first Paddington movie is just incredibly sweet. As a Mexican-American I found myself comparing myself to Paddington a lot - he's a stranger in a strange land who initially is unsure if his environment will like him and his situation is kind of similar to immigrants / people who aren't of a dominant nationality. But also as someone whose autistic I found myself relating to Paddington in that regard as theres a lot of things he misunderstands or "approaches" differently which is a lot like my life. He's not dumb but the world and the way he approaches and takes in information is different, but thankfully (though it does ire some people) his family found in the Browns are understanding, willing to learn with him to teach him about things. I don't find many characters that I feel relate on this level especially with autistim but Paddington definitely resonates with me in that regard. Also the fact Paddington genuinely is polite, he wants to make friends even when he encounters people and individuals whom he unintentionally annoys or has a misunderstanding with, he does his best to be nice and do good. Maybe it's thhe fact I've gotten older that makes me drawn to Paddington; I feel especially in an age of evil people where those people are celebrated and in power is when we desperately need characters like Paddington Bear. And that's why he's one of my favorites.

V. Regina Mills / The Evil Queen (Once Upon A Time) - Regina Mills is one of my favorite villains turned heroes in all of media and probably the only one. You spend a lot of time early on seeing Regina the villain and coming to understand why she was the Evil Queen. She was the protagonist of her own story who wanted her happy ending like the heroes and the show highlights both her wrongs as well as the ultimate good in her. Regina gets to grow and develop and make up and live for her past actions which most media hardly ever gets right. Regina also is just funny and relatable dealing with her nature wanting absolute power but really just wanting the good things that come with a fairy tale ending. She’s also pretty cute both as the Evil Queen and Regina Mills

VI. Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock)
- I just love how balanced a character Sherlock is. He's the most normal on this list, being pretty much an ordinary human who just happens to be super smart. What gets me is that this character is portrayed as having Aspergers which I almost never see in media and it''s not confirmed but in the way he acts and how he grows and interacts with characters reminded me a lot of myself and there's small moments that felt relatable. He's also a pretty cool character who genuinely loves what he does - being a crime solver, and it's fascinating to watch him solve cases with his thought processes and unique approach to solving cases. But he's also pretty funny as a character with him misunderstanding or not getting things that are outside of his expertise. His love of dogs shows the goofy and ultimately kind person underneath and though initially cold, it's through his friendships with John Watson and others that Sherlock really sees the benefit of using his talents to helping the greater good. From episode one to the last, you see Sherlock who is a great detective become ultimately a good man and it's a journey and character arc that is truly satisfying and cements him as a great character.

VII. Aslan (The Chronicles of Narnia) - Aslan is just super cool. He's a big lion with God like powers, has the voice of Liam Neeson, and is the symbol of good. What's not to like about Aslan? Some of my feelings are more mixed about the Narnia books as I've gotten older (being a Christian and proud of it but clearly disagreeing with the kind of racist notions put in its books) but my opinion of Aslan has mostly remained the same in that he's pretty cool. I realize as far as lion characters go we don't get any with as much actual good character like Aslan. There's also a nice mix of lore that is never touched upon but intriguing none the less and that beyond what happens in Narnia, Aslan is always active of a character and always on different adventures across dimensions and time. Aslan in the first two books is also pretty cool too as the opposite of Jadis - who is presented as ultimate evil to Aslan who is supposed to be the ultimategood. It's leads to great scenes of verbal sparring between Aslan and Jadis building upon an interesting rivalry - the heroes are the kids, but ultimately the last fight is between Aslan and Jadis because the two are so opposite that them fighting is inevitable. He cares so greatly about Narnia and dissagrees with Jadis and takes action upon her and other enemies that you get why the legends about him are what they are and why the Narnians over time respect him.

VIII. Erza Scarlet (Fairy Tail) - I have  to admit something. Aside from Season 1 of Fairy Tail and the Priestess of the Phoenix movie I haven't fully watched this anime nor do I expect myself to actually do so. It kind of just doesn't work as a story nor do it's characters appeal to me or do anything other series haven't done better. But that being said Erza Scarlet still rules as a character who is both beautiful but also strong. Some might say a bit OP and... well I agree. Nothing feels like Erza actually grows when it comes to certain fights later on which is a shame as with her backstory, personality and traits, she makes for a more interesting protagonist than Natsu. Even with Fairy Tail being such a hot mess, that doesn't eliminate how cool Erza is. But what makes me like her as a strong character is just how goofy she can be - being honorable and a true leader yet also a lady who gathers items like she's in a Japanese RPG and who can be silly and eat cake and then gets into fights over her cake. She's a great balance I feel as a female character who is strong in the traditonal sense of brawns and yet also is strong in the sense of spirit and brains - she's a caring soul and you truly see that in learning her backstory and why she's kind of the big caring sister to her friends. But she also is someone whose undoubtedly feminine wearing dresses and outfits and liking that and showing that having those traits does not detract from being strong as a character or as a person. It's actually ironic as she's written to be TOO powerful and that's what somewhat detracts. Yet in the end of the day she's the same goofy cool Erza that I think is way better than her series.

IX. Ayaka Kagari (Witchcraft Works) - Ayaka is the heroine of the manga / anime Witchcraft Works and honestly kind of underrated in that regards. Where I feel a majority of female anime characters these days are made for marketablility, Ayaka herself is written to be a strong character first. And she's literally strong too - as WCW is kind of a reverse shonen with women as the strong characters / fighters but they use creative unique magic abilities. Ayaka doesn't waste time with overly long fights or attack names and knows her own strength well enough that she generally one hit KOs enemies and really uses her intellect to her advantage in stopping situations. There's villains that might blackmail her and her love Honoka? Blackmail them and then kidnap them of course! The main antagonist Medusa has come to your door? Black mail her too and keep her at your house. It's ridiculous and whats funny is that Ayaka never breaks - she's always a cool calm collected aloof girl throughout it all yet it's her stoic cool face and personality that makes the ridiculous things she gets to all the more hilarious like when summoning unique powers or even just being affectionate with Honoka. She's also taller than her love interest and it's not made to be a jab or pointed out at all. And Honoka in relation shows no ire in that Ayaka is stronger than him physically and as far as being a witch is concerned -that's actually what makes her even more attractive to him. It's rare i see relationships like this where a female partner is allowed to be unconventional and that not always being pointed out - Ayaka is tall, she's cool, she's goofy, and strong and powerful, and that with her natural beauty makes her even more beautiful. And she rocks as a character in general.

X. Ichiko Sakura & Momiji Binbouda (Binbougami Ga!) - The appeal of Ichiko and Momiji as characters is... their dynamic is like Tom & Jerry - both are at each others throats as Momiji is a deity who has to reduce Ichiko's "Happiness energy" which is a lot even by normal human standards and affects the world. Ichiko while having a heart is so jaded and closed off from others that she selfishly wants it all to herself. What makes both characters redeemable despite both not being that perfect or even good hearted (Momiji partly gets jealous of Ichiko's luck) is that they're both so fucking funny at what they do, how each schemes against the other, and the silly adventures that result from it. Their world is wacky full of references and comedy and both play their parts hilariously. But they work also because they're still loving people underneath it and unlike old cartoons they both grow even to become kind of friendly enemies to a genuine friendship that is actually kind of heartfelt. It's this growth from the wacky looney tunes esque comedy that slowly grows from both frenemies to tolerating and even liking each other thats just actually sweet to see unfold. The fact also that this is a strong female friendship on display throughout the show that's front and center is something I love so much about them. Ichiko is cold and vain and Momiji isn't exactly always motivated by good but the two balance each other out and find in each other a kindred spirited neither realized they needed out of each other but then come to find neither wants to leave each other as friends. And that's pretty neat

XI. Lucina (Fire Emblem) - Lucina might be my favorite major character from a video game. She's not technically the protagonist but she is so important to the role of the story that she almost is a protagonist in her own right as she appears suddenly in Fire Emblem: Awakening to aid Chrome and the Player and for some reason is super strong and cool. But her backstory is tragic and just works overall explaining her heroic nature - she is a lot like Trunks from DBZ in just what her role is and how she fits into the wider story that makes you honestly sympathize with her. But despite the hellish nature of where she comes from she stilll is quirky and funny as shown in her interactions with other characters. Also a lot of appeal is in Lucina's rad design that's blue armor plus a cape which combined with her hair looks super rad. That and Laura Bailey's great performance as the character making her distinct as a heroine. She actually gets lines of dialogue unlike other characters sans Marth and her cutscenes are really excellent showing how she's heroic, fearful, brave, vulnerable, and kind of unsure but definitely a protagonist through and through.

XII. Luke Cage (Marvel Cinematic Universe) - Probably the coolest and most normal human superhero to date. Which is saying something since Luke Cage does have superpowers - his skin is bulletproof hard and he has incredible super strength. But Luke isn't a billionaire with all the tech and money at his disposal nor is he an indestructible Superman. He's strong sure, but Luke also works hard for a living maintaining multiple jobs, deals with real problems like rent, love, and a past he has to reckon with that doesn't involve his superpowers. I'm mainly referring to the Luke Cage portrayed by Mike Colter on the Netflix shows mostly because this is the version I feel is pretty perfect. He's a relatable superhero that faces real issues - especially now with current events - but is an honest guy who can be somewhat corny but also has regular people's back. Personally, Luke is so well written as a character that he really deserves to be in a MCU movie with the Avengers.

I absolutely love your explanation of Ruby. People have been giving her and the show so much crap since volume 5 that I felt like I was the only one who believes in her. You have just become my favorite person just for that.

I drew Ruby too so check out my fan art. She rocks and I see a lot of myself in her but also I just think shes criminally underrated and not understood just like the show isnt that understood even by its own fans.
