Description Another shot at some light manipulation. Texture from resurgere - [link] . Long shutter time for that fluffy water, and a gradual filter for the doomy blue sky.

The unedited version is in the scraps, since some of you asked to see it: [link]

I like the ominous feel of dread to this piece. It's neat how the curving line of the ridge draws the eye to the trees in silhouette, standing in the background like looming soldiers. The way the water at the right is churning, coupled with the almost unnatural golden color, contrasts really nicely with the smooth brownish flow of water off to the left. I like the sense of gloom you've added to the sky by making it darker and muddier with rain-like textures.

The only thing I don't like is that rock thing right in the bottom left corner. It interrupts the flow and smooth lines of the water by drawing the eye's attention. Some creative cropping could fix that, I think.

I agree about the rock in the bottom left, but I didn't like the picture when cropped, so.. I'll leave it like this for now.

I like the lighting effect for the water, but the sky looks a bit weird... kinda dithered. It needs to be smoothed out. Anyway, very cool edit!

I tried a smoother version, actually, but I preferred this. More dramatic and darker. I guess it suits my tastes better ^^ Thanks for viewing and commenting!

Haha, well.. I can't really speak on anything else than what I've got myself, which is a Canon EOS 400D. Well pleased with it. Could probably have done just as well with a Canon EOS 350D or Nikon D40 though. Check out dpreview for in depth tests of cameras, I sure found it helpful: [link]

it seems really calm in there
awesome texture and
manage of browns

Thank you! It does look calm to the left, but the water is running quite fast, so I wouldn't want to get out into that stuff ^^

I think is my favorite of the ones you posted, the subdued colors just make the piece. I suppose the vast rapids add a bit too, haha.

AestheticDevil [2007-12-17 21:15:41 +0000 UTC]

Your editing really lifted the photo from boring to interesting, but I think it's kind of a shame that you lost the detail and color on the trees I think that their texture could have been a good break in the picture. Something makes this feel just a little too datk, possibly the top part of the sky.

Keep up the good work!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Fnuffleh In reply to AestheticDevil [2007-12-18 07:27:43 +0000 UTC]

Allright, thanks for the critique! I see what you mean about the trees, not sure how I could have left the colours unedited on the trees alone. I'm still really new to this whole photoshop manipulation thing.
And as for the darkness.. well, I like things a bit dark ^^

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

AestheticDevil In reply to Fnuffleh [2007-12-18 08:35:12 +0000 UTC]

Using a mask or making a selection of just the trees and then inverting it could be a way to go around it. A quick layermask it probably the easiest way.

Fnuffleh In reply to AestheticDevil [2007-12-18 11:39:52 +0000 UTC]

I suppose. Oh well, I don't think I'll be remaking it any time soon. I have tons of other pictures to work with, but lack the energy and/or imagination at the moment
