Description Juvenile black crowned night heron. Such beautiful sunburst eyes when they're this young. Was patient with me taking shots. Though it was at a pier and unfortunately they are much more human tolerant there. Unfortunate due to them tangling with the fishermen too often

I'm using the Rebel T3i and the lens for that was the good ol' 55-250. For being a cheaper lens it can do some nice stuff

That lens gets some stick but I've seen some great images such as yours taken with it. I think you just have to know how to get the best out of it. I guess the IS really helps, especially at the longer focal lengths. I've been using a 400D with an old 75-300mm. Has served me well so far

Yeah IS helps a lot! Hence I'm trying to get used to my 400mm f.6 NON IS

I know way back in the day IS wasn't heard of, but I'm spoiled, I miss it. But I'm starting to love the lens for BIF shots. Gulls make for great practice.

Wow that's some lens and at 640mm (35mm equivalent) focal length on your T3i would need a very steady hand or high shutter speed. I can imagine it would be great for BIF shots, albeit hard to keep the bird steady in the frame. I like the look of the 70-200mm f2.8L IS lens but its seriously expensive over here so that can only be a dream at the moment. I might hire one for a weekend to have a play

I have a friend that was using the f2.8 70-200mm lens and he loved it. Pretty sharp images out of it. If you do get a chance to play with it, go for it! I'd love to rent lenses to try...but one needs a credit card for that and shame on me I don't have one.

Yes a friend of mine had a similar experience with the lens and also heartily recommends trying it out. Guessing it might make the credit card groan a bit though lol
