General Appearance
The Koenigshund is a dog of considerable size and has a noble appearance, albeit somewhat bizarre. The dogs were bred to resemble lions in their thick "manes," elongated tail, and even gait. He is a red, coarse-coated dog with fur in texture similar to a retriever save for the somewhat silky adult “mane” on the neck of the animal. Dogs should stand a minimum of 28 inches at the shoulder and weigh at least 120lbs, while bitches should stand a minimum of 26 inches and weigh at least 118lbs. Both sexes should be commanding in presence. Dogs have long, slender tails that reach about the length of their spine. Ears and tail on the dog will be a darker shade of their body fur, while the legs and face will be lighter.
Head
Slender with a prominent stop in males, slighter in females. Skull, not too broad. Muzzle, long. Ears, erect and appear proportionate to the skull when facing front, longer from the sides.
Neck
Rather long, very strong and muscular, well arched, without dewlap or loose skin about the throat. Adult mane should grow in full at about eighteen months.
Chest
Very deep. Breast, moderate.
Back
Long with slight “ski-slope” at the stack. Arched loins.
Tail
Long and slightly curved, slender and well-covered with fur.
Belly
Well drawn up.
Forequarters
Shoulders, muscular, giving breadth of chest. Elbows high, neither turned inwards nor outwards.
Leg
Forearm muscular, and the whole leg strong and quite straight.
Hindquarters
Muscular thighs and hocks well let down and turning neither in nor out.
Feet
Moderately large and broad. Arched toes and thick claws for use in high speed chase.
Hair
Coarse on body and slightly silkier in adult mane. Wiry beard on lower jaw.
Color and Markings
The recognized colors are red (much like Irish Setters), but also allowed are variants of brown and gold, black and gray. Minimal white is acceptable on the chest but not preferred. Breed specific markings “King’s Cap,” “Half-Wing,” and “Wings” should always be either white (King's Cap, Wings) or match ears and tail (Wings, Half-Wings).
Faults
Too light or heavy a head, too highly arched frontal bone; large ears and hanging flat to the face; drop or semi-prick ears; short neck; full dewlap; too narrow or too broad a chest; sunken or hollow or quite straight back; bent forelegs; overbent fetlocks; twisted feet; spreading toes; too curly a tail; weak hindquarters and a general want of muscle; too short in body. Lips or nose liver-colored or lacking pigmentation. White mismark anywhere but the chest, on chest exceeding four inches in width and/or length. Lack of mane is a fault and also lack of beard.
