Description "He'll tear your gut and he'll eat your heart raw.
His eyes gleam red, his heart will never thaw.
Mark well these words, you quaking babes.
Blood on the water follows Captain Velehk Sain."

Did I mention I love this random character in Skyrim?
Inspired by the book elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Pi… .

Of course we all know he's not as fearsome as the book want you to believe.
But after turning him into something cute and cuddly I thought I should redeem his character with something that kinda fits the book.

Now you see why I needed a bigger canvas. There was so much to paint. I couldn't have done it well on the 'regular' size.

I struggled with the water (or should I call it blood? ).
And it's the first time I've actually made a ship. I wanted it to look scary and Daedric-ish, so I based some of the shapes of the ship on the structures I've seen in Oblivion.
I hope you guys can recognize what he's holding in his hand as a heart... OTL
I made the heart and blood glowing to represent life energy.

-----------------------------------------

Cheers to Bethesda for making awesome random characters in their Elder Scrolls games.
I hope to see more of Velehk. But that will probably never happen.
No pirate adventures with a Dremora for me. :C
I hope they keep making awesome/funny Dremora (or other Daedra) characters.

Materials: Acrylic paint on canvas. 60x90 cm.
Time: About a week
Character belongs to Bethesda.
Painting belongs to me

EDIT- I removed the mature warning for now. I want people to see this when it's a thumbnail too. If it really is too scary and bloody I'll put it back on.

EDIT 2 - Fixed the 'D'. The ref for the Daedric letters I used had a mirrored 'D'. I didn't think it would matter, since they also showed the regular one, but all refs I could find had the mirrored one so that's what I ended up using. Then I finally found the official letters after I made this and found out it was indeed mirrored. Was too lazy to fix it earlier. Now I just have to go fix it on the actual painting...

Let me begin by saying this is one of the best pieces of art I've seen in a long time. Props to you. Even more props if this was handdrawn. However, I see two areas that don't need but could most certainly use improvement:
1) The "Heart" in His Left Hand
-In the description, it is stated that the organ he is holding is a heart. It may just be me, but I do not see a heart. Personally, I am having trouble determining what it is--despite the description, because (as I've said), it doesn't look like a heart. I do believe you should improve on detail.
2) The Boat
-Something about the boat seems unrealistic to me. It may be the over-sized stern that bugs me, especially when you take into fact that a stern on a boat like that in real life would be about half of this stern's size.
These things could just be me, but I recommend taking this ideas into consideration. Other than that, the art is exellent.
ORIGINALITY: 9/10
COLOR: 9.5/10
DETAIL: 9.6/10
VISUAL: 10/10
OVERALL: 9.6/10
Thank you for taking the time to read my critique and have a good day.

Thanks for the critique.
Hand drawn? How about hand painted.

I actually googled some refs for the human heart and I based mine on some photo's I found. Most of the results were illustrations and those were clearly what we know as a heart, but the photographs of actual hearts were not as recognizable. I wanted it to look like a real one, so I based mine on some photos.
I guess the problem in recognizing it in the painting lies in the fact that half of it is covered by the hand. And maybe because I chose for it to glow.

But I usually never draw or paint organs to begin with, this was my first try ever. Guess I'll just have to work on that on my next try.

As for the ship. I think I know what you mean. The stern does seem kinda big. I based the proportions a bit on some pirate ships I found with google.
It wasn't supposed to look very realistic for human standards. I tried to base it a bit on the structures in Oblivion, which are kinda big. Perhaps I exaggerated it a bit.

I'll keep it in mind if I'm going to make another pirate ship from hell.

or an 80's movie poster if you catch my meaning.

capital job. =3

btw, you know what they SHOULD have done with Velehk?
after releasing him they could have made him into a summon
to fight for you (120 secs tops)

GoodNIGHT!

You are so talented, you know that? This must've taken you AGES to paint. It's amazing!

I agree with the commenter below. It reminds me of those really cool, old-school fantasy and science fiction book covers. This really does belong on the
cover of a book.

I'm still sad that I don't remember this character. I wonder if there's a possibility that I missed him. In any case, I need to go looking for him, just in case ...

FoolishLittleMortal In reply to SlayerSyrena [2013-03-19 19:47:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! That means a lot to me. ;_;

I thought it was going to take much longer than a week. But it seems that I am magical.
I guess it would work great as a cover. Personally it reminded me of an old movie poster. Heh heh. Blood on the Water, coming to theaters soon. IF ONLY! lol

It's quite possible you missed him. I believe the quest doesn't even show up in the journal. You'll have to go under the Winterhold college in the Midden dark and find the Daedric gauntlet. There should be a table with a journal and a key next to it. The key opens a chest in the library of the college (but you can also lockpick it) and in it are 4 rings. Place the rings on the Daedric gauntlet and he will appear.

Not much really happens in the quest, but I thought he was fun. He seemed like a very interesting and cool character, but he's mostly shrouded in mystery. Which is a shame. So it's up to imagination.

It's got the air of those old adventure novels covers. And the use of complementary colours on it gives it a nice push.

I always try to pay attention to details as much as I can.
I first just sketched those two in the background like that, because it looked nice. Then I was all like... "But can they actually have that position?" So I started Skyrim and watched the nightsky for many nights to see the positions until this one showed up. I have no life.

lol You have no idea what "no life" is. I sit in front of my laptop all day writing Skyrim fanfiction that I'd never let anyone read. My life is wasted ! At least you spend your days doing something as awesome as this.
