hrm, it's sort've a mixture of a minimal number of brushstrokes, and like.... laziness. I don't blend anywhere near as much as I should, so the brushstrokes tend to be a lot more obvious.

and then yaknow just mucking around until you can make your style work for you. ;n; mine's still got a ways to go, tbh.
