Fog began to creep over the valley as Sioux and Xio lay nestled in a quiet thicket, their bodies gently swaying with their breathing. The two had been slowly recovering and traveling towards the green mountains Sioux knew so well. Their broken and emaciated bodies had pressed on with a wild determination and now both were shiney with physical health, though both suffered mentally. It was this reason they stuck together like glue. The support they gave each other through nightmares and relapses was crucial to their recovery.
It was one of those moments that awoke Sioux in a sudden sweat as he raged out of sleep, leaping to his feet and snapping at the empty air. His sudden start awoke Xio as well, who mimicked his actions, ready for anything.
"I'll kill ya!" Sioux hissed, still semi asleep as his eyes dialated to and fro to pull him out of his dreams. Xio, who had risen immediately, put her nose to his neck, nickering softly.
"Wake up, Sioux, wake up." She whispered softly, nudging him more to knock him silghtly off balance. "The fight is over. Wake up." In recognition of Xio's voice, Sioux's pupils focused on the world before him, as he searched for the mare. Urgently he reached his nose to hers, both of them closing their eyes and breathing in each other's scent. Both bodies began to relax as their unspoken ritual calmed their nerves.
"Th-...thank you Xio." Sioux whispered, not pulling away but opening his eyes to look into hers. Their gaze held the warmth of a love neither had ever known, and Sioux sighed heavily. "I don't know what I would do without you." The mare's eyes twinkled with sass as she wrinkled her nose.
"Probably wander the world a sad crumb bum." She grinned, shaking her mane as they both finally broke their touch, looking around themselves at the foggy dawn. Her expression turned slightly serious as she gazed back at him. "Fighting again?" She asked.
"A neverending brawl." Sioux sighed, looking away from her into the woods, and breathing in the cool air to calm himself more. "... the bloodlust came back like a horse finding a pool in the desert." His ears lay back as shame welled over him at the lives he had taken, and the joy it had brought him. His voice shook as he continued, "I... I don't want to be a monster anymore Xio..."
The mare shoved her face into his, taking him by surprise as she wrapped her body close to his. "And you won't." She demanded, squeezing him tighter. "Not while I'm around." Sioux held the mare back, trying to keep the moment in his mind forever to help him think positively.
It was then that they heard a small noise, a huff of a horse and a tiny nicker. Immediately both were alert and Sioux pinned his ears. The sound was coming from a dense grove of woods, perfect for something to remain hidden if needed. The two horses looked at each other at the suspicious noise, and without a word Sioux began to walk forward, ready to face whatever danger lay before them.
"h-help..." came a small nicker from the underbrush and Sioux started as he recognized the voice.
"M-mia??" Sioux questioned, looking for the unseen filly, when suddenly a snort of anger pulled his attention to the right. A perlino stallion walked out of the bushes his ears pinned.
Sioux understood by the look in the stallion's eyes that his fighting days were not over.
