There is a saying that there are only 6 stories and everything is a variant of those stories. Just work on making things fun and work from there. Enjoy your writing and try to experiment.

uhm... what if you have been thinking of a story... and the storyline has gotten a little out of hand as it goes into multiverse theory, string theory, extra dimensions, and the storyline can now fill 12 books while still not explaining everything... how would you go about writing that???

forbiddenhero In reply to zoriusth [2013-06-19 16:18:21 +0000 UTC]
You would just write it. Find ways to explain what needs to be explained while still leaving enough out to keep people guessing. If it's that profound of a story, then I'm sure you can have ins and outs all throughout the story.

Yeah. The Xanth series is pretty long as well, currently up to 38 books.

Sounds like a good idea to me. I hope your story does well. Tell me when the books are out, and I'll buy a few copies.

The best thing to remember is to describe things. Don't expect people to know what you're thinking. Use a vague element only when needed or else your writing will be very dull. Your work wasn't very impressive. Sorry. I can see where you're going, but you lack any real elements. You're not telling stories or creating any powerful emotions. You're just saying things. A good story not only tells you what's happening, but also makes you feel it, makes you want to keep going. Your writing seems very young, but there's one really good thing about writing badly. Every great writer has written poorly. Don't stop trying, but also listen to the advice of others. Develop your own style and find something that works with your strengths. Keep it up, and you'll go far. Just don't let someone saying that your work is bad bring you down. Yes, you have a long way to go, but so do I. My work is far from perfect, but as bestselling author Maureen Johnson will tell you, keep on sucking. Dare to suck.

Very helpful! Made me re-think a lot of my ideas, and how I approach to them. But I think the best about this tut is that it is encouraging begginers to write!

I wrote this as I was just a beginner as a writer. I was still learning all the rules, and those were the basic tips that I learned.

One of my friends told me that I should write out my ideas, so I did it for her. I didn't really care, but then I realized that I enjoyed getting my ideas written out. It's been about four years since then.

Actually, I'm still trying to find a place to get exposure and input for my work. I wouldn't mind reading your work, but honestly, my opinion isn't the greatest out there. I like to review things, but I don't look hard enough on them to get the deep understanding people are looking for in a critique. The best thing to do is to show things off to beta readers, or people who are close to you who also care about your art.

Very helpful article. And you're right on #4 -- many of the villains in my series are roughly based on existing villains, the main inspirations being Sauron from The Lord of the Rings and Organization Xlll from, yep, Kingdom Hearts. Sucks, though, because prior to even knowing about KH I'd made a character that had long, spiky hair and carried a book as a 'weapon' (Water elemental abilities), but then I played it and found Zexion. Ciest la vie.

This really helps! I mainly write poems but occasionally I'd start a story and just get stuck because I keep going back and messing with what I've written and loosing sight of what will happen in the story.

Oh I know what you mean. It's hard, and we often find ourselves making time just to write. That's one of the reasons that I sleep in a lot. I'm either writing or talking to the person who helps me write.

For me, it's just writing. When I'm sitting in my room with a notebook or my cell phone (it has microsoft word on it so I can type my stories even if I'm not on the computer. HOW COOL IS THAT?!) I just get lost in my own story and wish I didn't have to come out of it. Reality makes me sad sometimes T.T *sniffles* I let a couple of my friends read the first chapter of one story I'm working on now and a lot of them like it. It's a real boost of confidence when other people like my work ^_^ Hopefully when I'm done, it will be a decent success. Best of inspirations for you and your writings!

Thanks. Well there are a few differences in fanfiction writing. I prefer it when people take a known universe and put their own characters in like *Lock-of-Hyrule does. I mean, the cannon characters are great, but it shows more creativity to create a separate story.
